Chapter 5 - The Boardroom AmbushThe executive boardroom of Sterling & Cole Enterprises hummed with nervous tension. Dawn was just breaking, painting the sky outside the massive glass windows in bruised shades of purple and gray.

Seated around the gleaming mahogany conference table were the senior board members, city officials, and the lead investors of the multi-billion-dollar waterfront development project. Among them sat Victoria Sterling, her posture rigid, her face an unreadable mask of corporate composure. She had spent the entire night rallying the board, whispering behind closed doors to ensure that everyone was aligned against Nathan’s sudden, erratic shift in policy.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Nathan walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored suit with a pocket square; he wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his tie discarded. His face was set in stone, his eyes carrying the heavy, unrelenting weight of a man who had crossed a point of no return.

He didn't take his usual seat at the head of the table. Instead, he walked straight to the main presentation screen at the front of the room.

"Nathan," the senior board chairman, Arthur Vance, cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his glasses. "We have a very tight schedule this morning. The city council’s final zoning vote for the Elm Street waterfront development is in precisely two hours. I trust you've called this emergency meeting to sign off on the final clearance papers?"

Victoria watched him closely from her seat, her fingers steepled beneath her chin, a subtle, confident smirk playing on her lips. She had the votes. The board was terrified of losing the project's projected fifty-percent profit margin.

Nathan turned to face them, sliding a USB drive into the console.

"No, Arthur," Nathan said, his voice echoing cleanly through the massive, silent room. "I didn't call this meeting to sign off on the clearance. I called it to announce the immediate dissolution of the Elm Street project, the complete restructuring of our legal compliance division, and the termination of Victoria Sterling’s partnership effective immediately."

An explosion of gasps erupted around the table.

Victoria shot out of her chair, her face contorting with fury. "Have you completely lost your mind, Nathan?! You cannot do that! The board holds fifty-one percent voting power on operational restructuring, and I have every single member’s proxy right here!"

She slammed a stack of documents onto the table.

Nathan didn't blink. He simply pressed a button on the remote.

The massive presentation screen behind him flickered to life. Instead of architectural blueprints, the screen displayed a detailed financial audit—complete with bank account numbers, shell company registries, and scanned copies of the illegal sub-tier labor contracts tied directly to Victoria’s private signature and offshore accounts.

"You're right, Victoria," Nathan said smoothly, stepping away from the screen as the damning evidence flashed in high definition for every board member to see. "The board does hold fifty-one percent voting power. But they voted based on the financial projections you provided—projections built on fraudulent debt manipulation, extortion of low-income tenants, and illegal child labor subcontracting."

Arthur Vance stared at the screen in utter horror, his jaw dropping open. "Good lord... Victoria, what is this? Are these accounts linked to our corporate compliance division?"

"It’s a forgery!" Victoria shrieked, her composure shattering completely as she lunged toward the table, her voice cracking with panic. "Nathan is having a psychotic break! He’s trying to tank the company over a personal emotional episode! Don't look at that screen—"

"The financial transfers have already been flagged by federal investigators," a cold, calm voice interrupted from the doorway.

The heavy doors pushed open wider. Stepping into the boardroom was none other than Special Agent Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division, flanked by two armed agents in dark suits.

The room went completely, deafeningly dead.

Agent Miller walked straight toward the head of the table, flashing a federal badge directly in front of a horrified Arthur Vance, before turning his gaze toward Victoria Sterling.

"Victoria Sterling," Agent Miller stated loudly, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, extortion, racketeering, and violation of federal labor laws regarding illegal minor employment. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
