Chapter 7 - THE EULOGYWhen the doors closed behind the police officers, the church was quieter than before.

The air felt lighter, as if a toxic fog that had hung over the family for over a decade had finally been blown away by a winter storm.

General Vance walked slowly up to the podium, placing his hand gently on my father’s casket before turning to face the congregation.

"We came here today to honor a good man," General Vance began, his voice steady and resonant. "A man who served his country with distinction, loved his community, and cherished his daughters above all else."

He paused, looking directly at me.

"James didn't want a quiet memorial filled with fake smiles and hidden truths. He wanted his family back. And today, thanks to his eldest daughter—Captain Sarah Mitchell—that truth has finally set him free."

General Vance stepped away from the podium and gestured toward me.

I took a deep breath, smoothing the front of my Navy dress uniform, and walked up the steps to take my place at the podium.

I didn't talk about the fraud. I didn't talk about the betrayal.

Instead, I looked out at the faces of our neighbors, our friends, and my sister sitting in the front row.

"My dad taught me how to change a tire when I was twelve," I began, my voice steady, carrying a warm smile as memories flooded back. "He taught me that no matter how dark the road gets, you always check your equipment, you stay calm, and you keep moving forward."

I looked down at his photograph.

"He taught me how to add cinnamon to pancake batter—even though Mom hated the mess it made in the kitchen."

A soft, collective chuckle rippled through the pews, breaking the remaining tension.

"He wrote me letters every single week while I was overseas," I continued, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes, though this time they were tears of pride. "And even when I couldn't write back, he never stopped believing in who I was. Today, I wear this uniform not just for myself, but because he asked me to. And Dad... mission accomplished."
