CHAPTER 1 – THE MAN NO ONE DARED TO HELP

The rain fell harder with every passing minute.

People rushed past the lonely bus stop, umbrellas shielding their faces as if avoiding eye contact could erase guilt.

On the old wooden bench sat a frail elderly man.

His coat was soaked.

His hands trembled around a cracked leather bag that looked older than he was.

No one asked if he was okay.

No one even looked.

Until a teenage boy in a gray hoodie stopped.

"Sir... are you waiting for someone?"

The old man slowly lifted his head.

His pale blue eyes carried the weight of decades.

For a long moment...

He simply stared at the boy.

Then he whispered,

"I was beginning to think... everyone had forgotten me."

Those words hit the teenager harder than expected.

"My name's Ethan," the boy said softly. "Do you have family?"

The old man hesitated.

"My family believes I'm dead."

Ethan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The old man forced a weak smile.

"Because someone made sure they would."

Silence.

Only the sound of rain tapping against the glass shelter remained.

Ethan looked around.

No suitcase.

No phone.

No food.

Just that old leather bag clutched tightly against the man's chest like it contained the last piece of his life.

"Can I help you?" Ethan asked.

The old man slowly shook his head.

"No..."

Then after a pause...

"Unless you're willing to hear a story that could ruin your life."

Ethan should have walked away.

His mother had always warned him not to trust strangers.

But something about the man's voice...

It wasn't fear.

It was grief.

The kind that couldn't be faked.

Just as Ethan sat beside him...

A black luxury SUV slowly rolled to a stop across the street.

Its headlights remained on.

Neither passenger stepped outside.

They simply watched.

The old man's hands immediately began to shake.

His face turned ghost white.

"They found me..."

"What?"

"They've been looking for me for twelve years."

Ethan turned toward the vehicle.

The tinted windows revealed nothing.

Then...

The rear window rolled down just enough for a man in a black suit to smile.

Not a friendly smile.

A warning.

The SUV drove away without a sound.

Ethan looked back.

The old man was breathing rapidly.

"We have to call the police!"

"No!" the old man snapped, louder than before.

"If the police get involved..."

"They'll know you're with me."

Ethan's heartbeat accelerated.

Who was this man?

A criminal?

A witness?

Or someone far more important than he appeared?

The old man slowly unzipped the cracked leather bag.

Inside wasn't money.

Not clothes.

Not food.

Only a faded photograph...

A young couple.

A little girl.

And a man wearing an expensive business suit.

The old man pointed at the suited man with a trembling finger.

"That man..."

"...is America's most beloved billionaire."

Ethan nodded.

He recognized the face instantly.

Everyone did.

The old man's voice cracked.

"He..."

"...is my son."

Ethan froze.

Rain pounded against the shelter.

His mind refused to believe what he'd just heard.

How could the richest family in the country have abandoned an old man to die alone at a bus stop?

Before Ethan could ask another question...

The old man quietly whispered,

"And if they discover I gave you this photo..."

May you like

"...you'll become the next person they try to erase."
