Chapter 5: The Masked Man Didn't Come To Rob The Diner—He Came For Maya

Glass rained across the floor.
Women screamed.
Coffee cups shattered.
For one terrifying second, the entire diner disappeared into darkness.
Then the emergency exit lights flickered on.
Dim.
Red.
Barely enough to see.
Benjamin reacted first.
"Everyone get down!"
Customers dove beneath tables.
Lucy pulled two elderly women behind the counter.
Frank, the Vietnam veteran, instinctively shoved a family toward the kitchen.
Tyler buried his face against Maya's shoulder.
"Mommy..."
His tiny voice trembled.
"I'm scared."
Maya wrapped both arms around him.
"So am I, baby."
She whispered the words into his hair, praying he wouldn't hear the fear in her voice.
The masked man landed inside the diner with frightening precision.
He wasn't wild.
He wasn't panicked.
He moved like someone who had practiced this before.
Heavy boots.
Black tactical gloves.
Dark winter jacket.
His face hidden behind a ski mask.
Most alarming of all...
He ignored the cash register.
Ignored the customers.
Ignored the terrified waitress.
His eyes searched only one face.
Maya.
"There!"
he shouted.
Before anyone could react, he charged toward Booth Seven.
Benjamin stepped directly into his path.
"You're not touching her."
The masked man didn't answer.
His fist exploded forward.
Benjamin barely managed to block it before both men slammed into a nearby table.
Wood cracked.
Plates crashed onto the floor.
The attacker was stronger than he looked.
Far stronger.
"Run!"
Benjamin yelled without looking back.
"Maya, run!"
For one split second, she froze.
She had spent so many months running that every instinct screamed to stay still.
Then she looked at Tyler.
That decided everything.
She grabbed the backpack, clutched the envelope Eleanor had given her, and sprinted toward the kitchen.
Lucy threw open the swinging door.
"This way!"
Maya rushed through.
Behind her came Eleanor.
Frank.
Two frightened customers.
The diner had suddenly become a battlefield.
Benjamin struggled to hold the attacker back.
"Who sent you?"
No answer.
The masked man slammed an elbow into Benjamin's ribs.
Pain shot through his side.
Still he refused to move.
"You picked the wrong place."
The attacker reached inside his jacket.
Benjamin's heart stopped.
Not a gun.
A syringe.
Filled with a clear liquid.
Benjamin stared.
"What is that?"
Still no reply.
The attacker lunged.
Benjamin grabbed his wrist just inches before the needle reached him.
The syringe fell...
Sliding across the floor beneath a booth.
Frank saw it.
His military instincts ignited.
"Don't let him get that!"
Meanwhile...
Maya burst through the kitchen.
Steam filled the air.
Cooks stared in confusion.
"What happened?"
"No time!"
Lucy shouted.
"Back door!"
One cook rushed toward the exit.
He pushed.
Nothing.
"It won't open!"
Lucy frowned.
"It always opens."
Another cook pulled harder.
Still nothing.
Someone had chained it shut...
From the outside.
Maya's blood ran cold.
"They knew we'd come this way."
Benjamin heard those words from the dining room.
His stomach twisted.
This wasn't random.
Someone had planned every move.
Power cut.
Front entrance watched.
Back exit blocked.
The masked man wasn't improvising.
He was hunting.
Outside...
The black SUV remained parked.
A second vehicle slowly rolled to the rear alley.
Its headlights stayed off.
Inside sat another man wearing an earpiece.
"They're heading toward the kitchen."
The driver answered calmly.
"Good."
"No witnesses?"
"Too many."
A pause.
"Change of plan."
"What about the child?"
Several seconds passed.
Finally...
"Take the woman."
"Leave the boy."
The passenger hesitated.
"And if she refuses?"
The reply came without emotion.
"She won't have a choice."
Back inside the diner...
Tyler suddenly tugged on Maya's sleeve.
"Mommy..."
She looked down.
"What is it?"
He pointed toward the envelope she still clutched against her chest.
"It's bleeding."
She frowned.
"What?"
The corner of the envelope had torn during the escape.
A dark red stain slowly spread across the old paper.
Not ink.
Not paint.
Blood.
Fresh blood.
Maya stared in disbelief.
Eleanor gasped.
"That's impossible."
Benjamin, still fighting in the dining room, shouted,
"Maya!"
She looked up.
"Open the envelope again!"
With trembling fingers she unfolded the letter completely.
A second sheet slipped free.
It had been hidden inside the lining of the envelope all along.
The page was covered with faded handwriting.
Across the top were seven words that made Eleanor collapse into a chair.
"If you're reading this... they failed to kill us."
Beneath the sentence was a signature.
Not Emily.
Not Maya.
Not Eleanor.
The signature read:
Detective Samuel Brooks
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"My husband..."
Benjamin froze.
"I thought you said he died twenty-four years ago."
"I did."
Eleanor's voice cracked.
"Because that's what they wanted everyone to believe."
At that exact moment, the masked attacker heard the name.
He stopped fighting.
For the first time since breaking into the diner...
He looked afraid.
He slowly turned toward Maya.
Then whispered three chilling words through his mask.
"She's alive..."
Before anyone could understand what he meant, three black SUVs screeched to a halt outside the diner.
Their doors flew open.
Six armed men in identical black coats rushed toward the entrance.
The masked attacker looked out the broken window...
And instead of attacking again...
He whispered,
May you like
"We're too late."
