Chapter 4 - The Traitor in White

The hospital suddenly felt like a labyrinth of hidden daggers. Sarah stood up, her grief instantly morphing into a cold, protective fury. As a mother, she would tear the world apart to keep Emma safe. As a veteran nurse, she knew every blind spot, every shift change, and every backdoor in St. Mary’s.
"Who had access to this wing during the shift change?" Sarah demanded, her voice cutting through the quiet panic of the ICU corridor.
Detective Vance pulled out her tablet, swiping rapidly through the digital access logs. "Only three staff members scanned their badges near Room 4 in the last twenty minutes: Dr. Harrison, a night-shift phlebotomist, and... Nurse Evelyn Brooks."
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. Evelyn? Evelyn Brooks had been Sarah’s closest friend at St. Mary’s for six years. They shared coffee breaks, carpooled during snowstorms, and gossiped about hospital administration over takeout sushi.
"No," Sarah shook her head violently. "Not Evelyn. That's impossible. Evelyn has two kids of her own—she adored Emma!"
"People do desperate things when debts come due, Mrs. Johnson," Vance reminded her grimly. "Let's check the medication dispensing room."
They hurried down the sterile corridor toward the pharmacy bay. The door was unlocked, hanging ajar by half an inch. Pushing it open, they found a scene of calculated chaos. Inventory boxes were tossed on the floor, and the restricted narcotic and heavy-metal antagonist locker was pried open with a surgical scalpel.
And standing right in the middle of the mess, calmly wiping her hands with a sterile alcohol swab, was Nurse Evelyn Brooks.
She didn't even look startled when Sarah and Detective Vance stepped into the doorway. She just turned slowly, a bittersweet, melancholic smile playing on her lips.
"Sarah," Evelyn said softly, tossing the blood-stained cotton ball into the biohazard bin. "I'm sorry you had to find out this way."
"Evelyn... please tell me this is a nightmare," Sarah choked out, stepping forward with her hands trembling. "Michael said he was coerced by a syndicate, but you—why would you touch my daughter? What did Emma ever do to you?"
"Emma didn't do anything, sweetie," Evelyn sighed, walking over to the counter and leaning against it with chilling casualness. "It was never personal against Emma. It was about him—your husband."
Sarah blinked, disoriented. "Michael? What does Michael have to do with you?"
"Twelve years ago, before you and Michael were married, Michael worked at a venture capital firm in Chicago," Evelyn said, her eyes darkening with old venom. "My older brother was his junior partner. Michael embezzled three million dollars, pinned the entire white-collar crime on my brother, and walked away clean. My brother spent five years in federal prison, lost his license, and hung himself in a garage because his name was destroyed."
Evelyn stepped closer, her voice dropping to an icy hiss.
"Michael thought he got away scot-free. But I tracked him down when he moved to Seattle. I watched him build his perfect little life with you and Emma. And I decided... if he wanted to ruin my family by taking everything away, I would ruin his by taking the only thing he truly cared about. Except, I didn't want him to go to prison right away. I wanted him to suffer slowly, watching his own child fade away, thinking he was the one who caused it."

"You framed him!" Sarah gasped, the terrifying puzzle pieces finally snapping together in her mind. "You got him tangled up with your contacts in that dark-web syndicate! You manipulated him into buying the thallium so the police would point the finger straight at him!"
"Bingo," Evelyn smiled darkly, reaching into her scrub pocket and pulling out a small syringe filled with a clear, lethal fluid. "And now that Michael is caught, I just need to tie up the loose ends. Once little Emma passes away quietly from a 'post-poisoning cardiac arrest,' this entire tragic chapter will be closed forever."
