Chapter 5 - Descent into the Sub-BasementThe black transport van tore through the rain-slicked streets of downtown Seattle at breakneck speed.

In the back, bathed in the eerie blue glow of the dashboard instrumentation, Nathan clutched the silver pendant while keeping one arm wrapped tightly around the twins, who were still sleeping soundly despite the chaos. Sitting right beside him, legs crossed on the leather bench, was Lily. She was humming the lullaby softly under her breath, her fingers rhythmically tapping against her knee.

"How did you know to throw it?" Nathan asked, his voice strained as he watched the downtown skyscrapers streak past in a blur of neon and rain.

"Catherine trained me," Lily said simply, adjusting her oversized sweater. "She said, 'If they corner you, never hide the key. Make them chase it. Because people blinded by greed only look at what they want to grab, never what’s slipping through their fingers.'"

Nathan stared at the little girl with a mixture of awe and profound sorrow. His wife had prepared for her own kidnapping. She had built a contingency plan out of an orphan girl she had saved six months ago, trusting the fate of her entire family to a child's courage.

"We're approaching the perimeter," the driver called out from the front partition. It wasn't one of Julian’s men; it was Marcus, Nathan’s head of private intelligence, who had managed to intercept them near the airport perimeter with a clean vehicle.

"Status on the Neurosoft facility?" Nathan asked sharply.

"Locked down tight," Marcus replied, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror. "Vance’s security detail has evacuated the upper floors. They’ve barricaded themselves in Sub-Level 4. The glass room."

Nathan’s jaw tightened. Sub-Level 4. The birthplace of their neural network, and now, the execution chamber for Catherine’s mind.

The van screeched to a halt in the subterranean loading bay of the Neurosoft headquarters. The massive steel garage doors rolled upward automatically as the silver pendant in Nathan’s pocket broadcasted the master override code.

Stepping out into the underground parking structure, the air felt thick, heavy with ozone and the hum of massive server banks.

"Marcus, take the twins and Lily to the safe zone on Level 2," Nathan commanded, pulling a sleek, military-grade pulse-pistol from Marcus's holster.

"Dad—Mr. Wells, no," Lily protested, standing up straight. "I’m coming with you. Catherine’s inside. And the glass room only opens for someone who knows the frequency of the heartbeat."

Nathan looked down at her. He wanted to refuse, to shelter her from the nightmare. But looking into those steady, fearless brown eyes, he realized something vital: Lily wasn't just a witness. She was the key.

"Stay behind me," Nathan said grimly. "Let's go find your mama."
