Chapter 5 - The InvitationA week later, a black town car pulled directly up to Maya’s apartment building just as she was stepping out for work. The rear window rolled down, revealing Raphael.

"Get in," he said, not unkindly. "You'll miss your opening, and I'm treating you to breakfast."
Maya hesitated, looking at the plush leather interior of the car, then back down the street. "You make it very hard to say no, Mr. Marino."
"Raphael," he corrected softly. "And I take that as a failure on my part. Get in before you catch another cold."
She climbed inside, the heavy door sealing out the morning chill. The interior smelled faintly of cedar and expensive cologne. As the car pulled away smoothly into traffic, Raphael turned slightly toward her.
"I didn't come to intimidate you," he said, reading the guarded look in her eyes. "I came because I want to understand something."
"What's that?"
"How someone can spend their whole life surrounded by the worst parts of this city—abandoned animals, cruelty, neglect—and still look at the world the way you do."
Maya turned her head, looking out at the passing storefronts. "Because animals don't lie about who they are, Raphael. When they hurt, they hurt honestly. When they trust you, it's real. People like you... you build walls so high you forget what it feels like to just exist without armor."

Raphael was silent for a long time. The car wove through the morning streets, stopping at a quiet, upscale Italian bakery far from the gritty alleyways where they had first met.
"Maybe," he murmured, his voice laced with quiet introspection. "Or maybe I just never met anyone worth taking the armor off for."
