Chapter 4 - THE SPIDER’S NESTThe north cottage had stood at the edge of the Caldwell estate for nearly a century. Originally built as a guesthouse, it had fallen into disuse, its windows covered by thick ivy and rotting shutters.

Yet, as Graham crept through the overgrown perimeter weeds under the pale moonlight, he noticed a faint, amber glow flickering behind the dust-caked kitchen window.

A wisp of sweet, chemical-heavy air drifted past his face.

Natural gas.

Graham dropped low, slipping his pocket knife between the rusted latch of the rear kitchen window. With a soft click, the lock gave way. He pushed the window open, sliding silently over the sill into the pitch-black pantry.

Voices echoed from the tiny living room ahead.

“...won’t matter once the main line builds enough pressure,” Martha’s voice rasped, cold and steady. “By the time the security patrol checks the perimeter at midnight, this whole structure will be a crater. We report it as an accidental gas leak from an old stove line. The maid and her bastard child were squatting here without authorization. Case closed.”

“And Graham?” Vanessa’s voice sounded thinner, laced with panic. “What about the recordings he found?”

“Graham is a grieving widower who lost his second household in a tragic accident,” Martha replied, her tone dripping with absolute arsenic. “He’ll retreat into his work, drink himself to sleep every night in that empty mansion, and leave the estate entirely in my hands—just like he did after Caroline’s car went off the cliff.”

Graham stepped out of the pantry shadows, the heavy barrel of his pistol catching the faint amber moonlight cutting through the dusty window.

“The estate isn't going to anyone, Martha.”

Both women spun around.

Martha didn’t flinch. Instead, a slow, horrifying smile spread across her wrinkled face. She didn’t look like an elderly housekeeper anymore; she looked like the apex predator of the estate.

“You’re too late, Graham,” Martha whispered, holding up a small, battery-operated electronic detonator wired directly to the floorboards. “The timer was set the moment you stepped foot on the property. We win.”
