Chapter 5 — The Stranger Outside the Mansion Wasn't Watching Lucy... He Was Watching Grace

The text message was delivered in less than three seconds.
"She's finally talking. It's time to move."
The man in the black baseball cap slipped his phone back into his pocket and disappeared into the darkness beyond the Brooks estate.
The security cameras never caught his face.
Only the shadow he left behind.
Inside the mansion, no one knew they had just become targets.
Everyone's attention remained fixed on Lucy.
The little girl still clutched Milo tightly against her chest.
For the first time in months, she wasn't holding Amelia's photograph.
Daniel noticed immediately.
His throat tightened.
That tiny wooden rabbit had done what millions of dollars in medical treatment had failed to accomplish.
It had made his daughter feel safe.
But her heartbeat remained dangerously weak.
The lead physician checked the monitor before turning to Daniel.
"She's stable..."
He hesitated.
"...for now."
Daniel hated those words.
For now.
Hope had become measured in minutes.
Grace sat beside Lucy's bed long after everyone else left the room.
She quietly hummed the lullaby Amelia had once sung.
No words.
Just the melody.
Slow.
Gentle.
Almost like a heartbeat.
Lucy's breathing gradually became more even.
Daniel stood outside the door, watching without interrupting.
For the first time since Amelia died, Lucy looked peaceful.
Not happy.
Not healed.
Just... peaceful.
It was enough to make Daniel's eyes fill with tears.
The estate manager quietly approached him.
"Sir..."
Daniel didn't look away from the bedroom.
"What is it?"
"We searched the security footage again."
"And?"
"The man outside the east fence."
Daniel finally turned.
"What man?"
The manager handed him a printed image.
A blurry figure stood just beyond the property line.
His face couldn't be identified.
But one detail stood out.
The man wasn't looking toward the mansion.
He was looking directly at Grace.
Daniel frowned.
"Do we know him?"
"No."
"But..."
The manager swallowed.
"He appeared three times this week."
Daniel's instincts immediately sharpened.
"Increase security."
"I want guards at every entrance."
"No one comes onto this property without my approval."
Later that evening...
Daniel found Grace standing alone in the garden.
She was staring at the stars.
"The moon still follows us," she whispered.
Daniel recognized the sentence instantly.
Amelia used to say it to Lucy.
"You remembered."
Grace smiled sadly.
"I remember everything about her."
Daniel stepped beside her.
For several moments, neither of them spoke.
Finally, he asked the question that had haunted him all day.
"Why did Amelia never tell me about you?"
Grace lowered her eyes.
"Because I begged her not to."
"Why?"
"Because I was ashamed."
Daniel looked confused.
"I had nothing."
"No family."
"No home."
"I didn't want the man she loved to think she was wasting her life on a broken little girl."
Daniel shook his head.
"She never would've thought that."
Grace smiled faintly.
"I know."
"That's why she loved you."
Daniel laughed softly through tears.
"She always saw people before she saw their circumstances."
Grace nodded.
"That's exactly how she found me."
Before either of them could continue...
A black SUV stopped outside the front gates.
Its headlights cut through the darkness.
One of the guards approached the vehicle.
Moments later, he hurried inside.
"Mr. Brooks..."
Daniel turned.
"A man is here asking for Miss Grace Ellis."
Grace froze.
"For me?"
The guard nodded.
"He says..."
The guard glanced down at the visitor log.
"...he's your uncle."
Grace's face instantly turned pale.
"No."
She whispered.
"That's impossible."
Daniel noticed genuine fear in her eyes.
"You don't have an uncle?"
Grace slowly stepped backward.
"My uncle died fifteen years ago."
The room fell silent.
The guard looked confused.
"The visitor showed identification."
Grace shook her head harder.
"No..."
"He can't be here."
Daniel placed himself between Grace and the entrance.
"Who is he?"
Grace's lips trembled.
"The last time I saw that man..."
She struggled to breathe.
"...I was eleven years old."
Daniel frowned.
"What did he do?"
Grace looked straight into his eyes.
"He tried to sell me."
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
Daniel's expression changed instantly.
From curiosity...
To absolute fury.
"Call the police."
The guards reached for their radios.
But before anyone could move...
A loud crash echoed from upstairs.
Glass shattered.
Someone screamed.
Daniel's heart stopped.
"Lucy!"
He sprinted toward the staircase two steps at a time.
Grace followed close behind.
When they reached Lucy's bedroom...
The window was wide open.
Cold night air rushed through the room.
Curtains whipped wildly in the wind.
One nurse lay unconscious on the floor.
The security alarm blared throughout the mansion.
Lucy's bed...
Was empty.
Only one thing remained on the pillow.
Milo.
And beneath the little wooden rabbit...
A folded note written in black ink.
Daniel unfolded it with shaking hands.
There were only eight words.
"You should have buried Amelia's secrets with her."
Daniel stared at the message in horror.
Then looked toward Grace.
Neither of them needed to say it aloud.
This was never about money.
Never about kidnapping.
Never about ransom.
Someone had waited for Amelia to die...
Waited for Lucy to start speaking again...
And now they had come to silence the only child who might remember the truth.
Far away, speeding through the Dallas night in a black van, a tiny voice suddenly whispered into the darkness.
"Milo..."
A masked man looked down at Lucy.
Then quietly muttered the words that made everyone inside the van fall silent.
May you like
"So..."
"The little girl really does remember."
