Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the EmpireBefore Claire could answer, the sharp, distinct sound of a helicopter slicing through the morning air shattered the quiet of Cape Elizabeth.

We both looked up.

A sleek black corporate chopper bearing the Moretti Holdings logo dropped out of the gray clouds, banking sharply before descending toward an open clearing near the cliffside access road.

My stomach plummeted. Marco.

"What is that?" Claire asked, her initial warmth instantly hardening back into defensive caution as she stepped back.

"I don't know," I lied, though my blood ran cold. "I told Marco not to follow me."

"Your empire never lets you go, Dominic," Claire said, a bitter, heartbreaking smile touching her lips. "You can talk about walking away all you want, but Moretti Holdings is anchored to your soul. You are the king, and kings don't get to abdicate just because they miss their queen."

The helicopter doors slid open as the skids touched the grass, and Marco stepped out, ducking low against the rotor wash. He jogged toward us, his face pale and urgent, holding a red-flagged tablet in his hand.

"Dominic!" Marco shouted over the roar of the idling engine, stopping a few yards away when he saw Claire standing beside me. He hesitated, lowering his voice out of respect, but the panic in his eyes was unmistakable. "I’m sorry to interrupt. But you need to see this right now. The British syndicate just initiated a hostile takeover maneuver using a hidden proxy shell. If you don't authorize the counter-measures within the hour, Moretti Holdings loses controlling interest in the European energy sector."

I didn't even turn around to look at Marco. My eyes stayed locked on Claire.

"Tell them no," I said coldly. "Tell them to execute the dissolution of my executive authority. I'm resigning."

Marco gasped, his eyes widening in pure horror. "Resigning?! Dominic, are you out of your mind? That’s thirty billion dollars in valuation! That’s your entire life's work!"

"It was never my life," I snapped, raising my voice over the helicopter blades. "It was my prison. Now get back in that chopper and leave me alone!"

"Dominic..." Claire’s voice was barely a whisper, but it stopped me dead in my tracks.

I turned to look at her. She was staring at the corporate helicopter, then down at my hand, and finally into my eyes with an expression of profound, heartbreaking clarity.

"You can't do it," she said quietly.

"I just did!"

"No, you didn't," she shook her head slowly, stepping backward toward her truck. "You're offering to burn it all down for me. Do you understand what that means, Dominic? If you destroy your empire out of spite, or out of a desperate attempt to win me back, you aren't leaving the corporate world behind—you're just letting me become another casualty of your obsession. You'll spend the rest of our lives resenting the company you gave up for my approval."

"That's not true!" I reached out, trying to grab her wrist, but she pulled away gently, her touch slipping through my fingers like water.

May you like

"It is true," she said, her voice breaking. "And the worst part is... I don't want a rescued prisoner. I want a man who chose me before the empire ever demanded a sacrifice. And that man doesn't exist anymore."

She opened the door of her truck, climbed inside, and slammed it shut before I could say another word.
