Chapter 1 - THE CRUEL LAUGHTER IN THE BALLROOMThe most feared mafia boss in New York offered to marry me right in the middle of a crowded, glittering ballroom, and everyone laughed because they thought it was just a cruel joke designed to humiliate a broke piano player.

They expected me to lower my head, blink back tears, and accept whatever public mockery Carmine Valenti wanted to dish out.
Instead, by the next morning, my reckless younger brother’s $400,000 debt had vanished completely into thin air, and a massive, blinding diamond ring sat resting quietly on my cramped kitchen table. But as I soon discovered, that ring was never meant to be a romantic proposal. It was a lock and a key to a vault of blood and lies.
I had spent eleven long months playing private background music for Valenti crime family events because my brother, Liam, had borrowed desperate money from the wrong men in Queens. I lived by three strict rules to keep myself safe: Never stop playing, never make eye contact, and never speak directly to Carmine Valenti.
Then, during a high-society charity gala at the Pierre Hotel, Carmine broke every rule.
He walked straight past wealthy politicians and high-ranking capos, stopping right in front of my grand piano. The entire ballroom went dead silent.
“Play a waltz and dance with me,” he ordered.
When I whispered that I couldn't possibly play the keys and dance at the same time, a slow, dangerous smile curved his lips. He replied that the orchestra was already pre-recorded. Then, raising his voice so every criminal, politician, and socialite in the room could hear every single syllable, he delivered the blow:
“If you dance this waltz with me, Josephine, I’ll marry you.”
The room exploded with mocking laughter. But my stomach plummeted. I knew instantly I wasn't free to refuse. My brother’s life hung in the balance. I stood up, walked onto the polished marble floor, and let Carmine pull me into his arms while Shostakovich filled the hall.
To the rich crowd watching from the sidelines, it looked like a fairytale moment. To me, it felt entirely like a hostage negotiation.
“You’re shaking, little pianist,” he murmured against my ear.

I kept my eyes fixed on his lapel. “Liam owes your organization $400,000. If I step on your foot, are you going to have him killed?”
Carmine tightened his grip around my waist, his expression carved from granite. “If you step on my foot, I’ll marry you tomorrow instead of waiting until spring.”
