CHAPTER 1: THE VOICE BEHIND THE CLOSED DOOR

Don Elías… forgive me for interfering, but every afternoon I hear a little girl screaming inside your house.”
The words fell into the quiet evening like a stone thrown into still water.
Elías Mendoza stopped in front of his iron gate, his hand still gripping the old set of keys. His clothes were covered with cement dust, his boots were dirty from another exhausting day at the construction site, and every muscle in his body begged him to rest.
But he didn’t move.
He only stared at his neighbor.
Doña Mercedes had lived next door for almost twenty years. She was not the type of woman who spread rumors. Everyone in the neighborhood knew she kept to herself.
That was why her serious expression frightened him.
—What did you say, Doña Meche?
The old woman stepped closer, lowering her voice.
—Every day around five in the afternoon, I hear a girl crying. She screams for someone to stop. Sometimes she begs for help.
Elías forced a nervous smile.
—You must be mistaken. There’s nobody here at that time.
The neighbor looked directly into his eyes.
—Then you don’t know what is happening inside your own house, Don Elías.
That sentence hurt more than any physical wound he had ever received.
Because deep down…
He knew something had changed.
His house no longer felt like home.
For twenty years, Elías believed he had done everything right.
He was not a rich man.
He didn’t drive expensive cars. He didn’t take luxurious vacations. He didn’t buy his wife diamonds or designer clothes.
But every morning before sunrise, he woke up and went to work.
He built houses for strangers while trying to keep his own family safe.
His greatest pride was his daughter Josefina.
His little girl.
The child who used to run into his arms whenever he came home.
The child who once told him:
“Dad, when I grow up, I want to marry someone exactly like you.”
But recently…
Josefina had disappeared.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
At fifteen years old, she had become a stranger living under his roof.
Her bedroom door was always closed.
She stopped eating dinner with the family.
She stopped talking about school.
She stopped smiling.
And every time Elías asked what was wrong, she gave him the same answer:
—Nothing, Dad. I’m fine.
But a father knows.
A father always knows when his child is suffering.
The problem was…
Elías was too tired to understand why.
His wife, Rebeca, seemed to have an explanation for everything.
“She’s just a teenager.”
“She’s going through a phase.”
“She’s being dramatic.”
And Elías believed her.
Because trusting his wife was easier than accepting the possibility that something terrible was happening.
That night, when he mentioned Doña Mercedes’ warning, Rebeca reacted immediately.
She dropped her purse on the sofa and laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
—Seriously, Eli? You’re listening to that old woman now?
—She sounded worried.
—She’s lonely. People like that invent problems because they have nothing better to do.
Elías looked at his wife carefully.
Something about her reaction felt strange.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Anger.
As if the neighbor had almost revealed a secret.
But then Rebeca walked toward him, kissed his cheek, and whispered:
—Forget it. You’re exhausted. Go sleep.
And once again…
Elías chose to believe the person he loved.
Two days later, Doña Mercedes stopped him again.
This time, she looked terrified.
—Elías, today it was worse.
His stomach tightened.
—What do you mean?
The woman swallowed hard.
—I heard your daughter crying.
A chill ran down his spine.
—Josefina?
The neighbor nodded.
—She said, “Please leave me alone.” Then she said something else…
Elías stepped closer.
—What?
Doña Mercedes hesitated.
—She said, “I won’t say what you want me to say.”
The world suddenly felt colder.
That evening, Elías went directly to Josefina’s room.
He knocked.
No answer.
He opened the door slowly.
His daughter was sitting on her bed, wearing headphones, staring at her phone.
She looked exhausted.
Too exhausted for a fifteen-year-old.
—Sweetheart…
Josefina quickly locked her phone screen.
—Yes, Dad?
—Are you okay?
A few seconds passed.
Then she smiled.
A fake smile.
—Yes. Everything is normal.
Normal.
That word broke his heart.
Because nothing about his daughter looked normal.
The next morning, Elías made a decision.
For the first time in years, he lied to his family.
He pretended to leave for work.
He kissed Rebeca goodbye.
He watched Josefina leave for school.
Then he drove his truck around the corner, parked, and returned home through the back entrance.
His heart was pounding.
He felt ridiculous.
Maybe Doña Mercedes was wrong.
Maybe he was just being paranoid.
But something inside him refused to ignore the warning.
He searched the kitchen.
Nothing.
The living room.
Nothing.
The hallway.
Nothing.
Then he entered his bedroom.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
He was about to leave when his eyes fell on the space beneath the bed.
A strange thought crossed his mind.
“What if someone was hiding something from me?”
Slowly…
He lowered himself to the floor.
And crawled underneath.
Minutes passed.
Ten.
Twenty.
Twenty-five.
His body started to hurt.
His mind started telling him he was crazy.
Then…
The front door opened.
Someone entered the house.
Soft footsteps.
A woman’s heels.
Then another sound.
Someone crying.
Elías froze.
The footsteps climbed the stairs.
His bedroom door opened.
The mattress moved.
Someone sat down.
Then he heard a trembling voice.
—Please… stop.
His blood ran cold.
That voice.
It was Josefina.
His daughter.
The same daughter who was supposed to be at school.
She was sitting on her parents’ bed.
Crying.
Hiding something.
From underneath the mattress, Elías could only see her school shoes shaking.
Then she whispered:
—I won’t lose.
A pause.
—I won’t let you destroy me.
Suddenly, her phone rang.
She answered with trembling hands.
—Mom…
Elías stopped breathing.
Mom?
Why was she calling Rebeca?
Then Josefina’s voice cracked.
—Mom, I already did everything you asked me to do.
Silence.
Then…
—But I won’t say my father hurt me.
Elías felt like the ceiling had collapsed on top of him.
His heart stopped.
His own daughter.
Accusing him?
But why?
Then Josefina whispered:
—It doesn’t matter how much you threaten me. I won’t lie about Dad.
A tear fell from her face onto the floor.
And Elías finally understood.
She wasn’t betraying him.
She was being forced.
At that exact moment…
The bedroom door opened.
A pair of heels appeared.
Rebeca.
His wife.
The woman he had loved for twenty years.
She walked inside calmly.
No panic.
No surprise.
Like she had planned everything.
—So you still refuse?
Josefina stood up.
—Mom, please stop.
Rebeca threw a folder onto the bed.
—Sign it.
Josefina stepped back.
—No.
Rebeca’s face changed.
The loving mother disappeared.
A stranger appeared.
—Do you know what happens if your father goes to prison?
Josefina started crying.
—You’re horrible.
Rebeca smiled coldly.
—No, sweetheart. I’m protecting us.
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
A false accusation.
A story carefully prepared.
A story that could destroy Elías’ life forever.
And then Rebeca said the words that made the hidden man beneath the bed understand everything:
—Your father will take the blame… and we will finally get everything we deserve.
Elías covered his mouth to stop himself from making a sound.
His wife wasn’t hiding an affair.
She wasn’t planning a divorce.
She was planning something much worse.
She wanted to destroy him completely.
But what Rebeca didn’t know…
Was that under that bed…
The man she was trying to imprison had heard every word.
And before the night ended…
She would discover that Elías Mendoza was not the helpless man she thought he was.
Because the next person to enter that room…
May you like
Would reveal the secret Rebeca had spent fifteen years burying.
