Chapter 3 - The Offer You Can't RefuseAs Derek was dragged away down the corridor—screaming empty threats about lawyers, police, and lawsuits while Brittany sobbed in hysterical humiliation—the hallway slowly returned to a tense, expectant quiet.

Dr. Sterling gave another polite bow to Luca, excused himself, and walked away, leaving the two of us standing by the nursery glass.
Inside, my baby girl let out a tiny yawn, stretching her little pink fists into the air.
My breath caught in my throat. The adrenaline crash was hitting me hard now; my knees felt weak, my hands were shaking, and the reality of what had just happened began to sink in. A complete stranger—the most powerful, feared billionaire in the city—had just legally attached his name, his protection, and his terrifying reputation to my newborn daughter.
"Why?" I whispered, my voice cracking as I stared at my reflection in the nursery glass. "Why would you do this? You don't even know me. What do you gain by making yourself the father of my child?"
Luca didn't answer right away. He stood beside me, his shoulder brushing mine, watching the baby with an expression that was impossible to read—part melancholy, part fierce determination.
"Seventeen years ago," Luca began, his voice dropping into a low, steady rumble, "my older brother and his wife were killed in a staged car accident. They left behind a little girl—my niece, Elena. A rival family tried to use her as leverage against our corporation. They threatened her life while she was still in a hospital crib, just like yours."
I turned my head, staring at the side of his face. The pale scar across his eyebrow seemed to catch the harsh fluorescent light.
"Did you save her?" I asked softly.
"I did," Luca said, his jaw tightening. "I tore their empire down to dust in less than forty-eight hours. But I learned a very hard lesson that day, Emma. In this world, the wolves don't care about your tears, your heartbreak, or your innocence. They only understand power. And the moment I saw that miserable coward walk away from you and his own flesh and blood... I saw the same wolves circling my niece all over again."
"So you just... decided to adopt us?" I asked, half-disbelieving, half-awed.
"Not adopt," Luca corrected, turning his slate-gray eyes directly onto mine. "Partner."
I stared at him. "Partner?"
"You need protection, Emma. You need resources, security, and a legal wall that no corporate shark or gold-digging mistress can ever scale," Luca said steadily, his gaze holding mine captive. "And my daughter—yes, our daughter, legally and publicly from this second onward—needs a name that commands absolute fear and respect."
"And what do you get out of this?" I challenged, my survival instinct kicking in. "Nothing in this life is free, Mr. Moretti. Billionaires don't attach their names to random waitresses or freelance designers without a reason."
A slow, appreciative smile touched his lips. I liked that you didn't immediately fall at my feet thanking me," he murmured. "Sharp. Good. What do I get? I get peace of mind. I get a fortress. And... I get to watch Derek Morrison lose everything he spent his entire miserable life trying to build."
"Derek?" I frowned. "What does Derek have to do with you?"
Luca reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a slim, gold-embossed leather folder, handing it to me.
"Derek Morrison has been embezzling from his firm's regional accounts for the last fourteen months to fund his lavish lifestyle with Brittany," Luca said casually, as if reading off a grocery list. "His boss is one of my primary board members. All it took was a single phone call from me this morning to initiate a full internal audit. By tomorrow morning, Derek won't just be a disgraced ex-boyfriend; he’ll be facing federal grand larceny charges."
I stared at the folder, then up at Luca. My jaw literally dropped.
"You... you already did that?"
"I told you, Emma," Luca said, stepping closer, his presence warm and overwhelming. "I don't leave children unprotected. And I don't let enemies breathe."
He reached out, his warm fingers gently wrapping around my trembling hand, pulling it away from the windowsill.
"Here is my proposal," Luca said, his voice dropping to an intimate murmur. "You and your daughter move into my estate tonight. You will have a security detail, a private nursery wing, unlimited financial backing, and the full weight of the Moretti name behind you. In exchange, you play your part as my partner in high society. No romance required unless it's earned. Just absolute, unbreakable unity."
I looked down at my sleeping baby through the glass, then down at the birth certificate in my hand, and finally up into Luca Moretti’s dangerous, captivating eyes.
My old life had ended ten minutes ago when Derek walked away.
It was time to build a new one.
"All right," I whispered. "I'll do it. But on one condition."
Luca raised an eyebrow. "Name it."
"I want to be the one who delivers the final blow to Derek."

Luca’s smile widened into something truly terrifying and magnificent.
"Deal."
