Chapter 1 - The Silence That Broke the EmpireThe phone line at Charles de Gaulle Airport hummed with a heavy, suffocating static. In that agonizing silence across the Atlantic, the man who had effortlessly orchestrated a double life finally stopped breathing.

"How did you find out?" Preston whispered again, his voice cracking, though it carried no surprise. Only the panicked realization that his carefully constructed house of cards had just collapsed into dust.

"Kendall sent me the photograph," Althia said, her voice entirely flat, stripped of the warmth that had sustained him for five years. "The one from Greenwich Town Hall. You and Cecily look radiant, Preston. Truly. The charcoal cashmere coat really brings out your complete lack of a soul."

"Althia, wait. Listen to me—"

"No, Preston. You listen to me." Althia’s gaze swept across the bustling departure terminal, the anonymous faces blurring into a sea of indifference. "You stood in front of a registrar, married my best friend, and then, less than twelve hours later, called me to talk about our honeymoon. You smiled into my face while another woman's ring was burning a hole in your pocket. You thought you could have it all, didn't you? My career connections, my loyalty, and whatever twisted domestic convenience you and Cecily cooked up behind my back."

"It wasn't like that—"

"Save it for someone who cares." Althia pressed her thumb against the screen. "Your father is dying. That is the only reason I am entertaining this conversation. Sterling Memorial wants a specialist, and right now, I am the only cardiothoracic surgeon in the world crazy enough to walk into that operating room. But do not mistake my professional oath for forgiveness."

"Althia, please. You have to get on the flight. I'll explain everything. Cecily meant nothing—"

"If you mention her name again, I will hang up, throw this phone into the Seine, and let nature take its course with Richard."

The threat landed like a physical blow. Preston went entirely silent.

"Boarding for flight AF006 to New York is now commencing," an automated gate voice chimed overhead.

Althia looked at her boarding pass one last time. First class. Paid for by Sterling Medical Foundation grants she had earned herself.

"I'm coming," Althia said coldly. "Not for you, Preston. Never for you. But when I walk through those hospital doors, you won't see your fiancée. You'll see your executioner."

She ended the call before he could speak another word, blocked his number, and stepped into the jet bridge, leaving her old life burning fiercely behind her in the Parisian twilight.
