Chapter 6 - THE RAT IN THE TRAPMark froze, the red laser dots painting a deadly grid across his chest and face. His confidence dissolved in a second, replaced by pure terror as he realized the ceiling turret was fully automated.

"Charles... wait," Mark stammered, taking a tiny step backward. "We can talk about this. The dark web stream is still live! Thousands of high-net-worth investors are watching right now. If I die, the auto-encrypt keys delete the entire off-shore bank network! You won't get a single cent of their funding!"
"You always lacked vision, Mark," Charles said softly. "You thought those pathetic underground investors mattered? They were nothing more than a bankroll to fund the hardware for my research. Now that the Aegis Protocol is complete, their money is irrelevant. And so are you."
"Sarah, shoot him!" Mark screamed, turning his desperate eyes to me. "He's going to kill us both!"
I stood between the two monsters, holding Detective Miller's gun. Every instinct in my body told me to shoot Mark for what he had done to my daughter, but if I fired, the automated security system might trigger a lock-down, destroying the golden syringes sitting in the glass case.
"Give me the antidote, Dad," I said, my voice dangerously flat. "Or I shoot the glass case and destroy every last drop of your life's work."
Charles' smile vanished. For the first time, a flash of genuine alarm crossed his eyes. "Sarah, be reasonable. That case is temperature-controlled. If the seal breaks, the compound degrades within seconds!"
"Then hand it over!" I shouted, raising the gun toward the glass containment unit.
"Don't do it!" Mark screamed, and in a moment of utter madness, he raised his submachine gun toward Charles and fired a rapid burst of bullets.
The automated turret reacted instantly. A hail of high-caliber gunfire ripped through the laboratory.
Mark was thrown backward against the concrete wall, his body riddled with bullets before he even hit the floor. He slumped down into a pool of his own blood, motionless.
At the same moment, several stray rounds shattered the heavy glass of the medical containment unit. Alarm sirens began to blare throughout the subterranean facility, screaming in a harsh red strobe:
CRITICAL CONTAINMENT BREACH. PURGE SYSTEM ACTIVATED IN 300 SECONDS.
"No!" Charles shrieked, sprinting toward the shattered glass case. He reached inside the twisted metal frame, his hands bleeding from the jagged edges, desperately grabbing the silver case containing the golden syringes.
Toxic white nitrogen gas began pouring from the ceiling vents, rapidly filling the room and dropping the temperature to sub-zero levels.
"Sarah!" Charles choked out, stumbling through the freezing mist toward me, holding the silver case tightly against his chest. "We have to get out! The automatic purge system will seal this facility and burn everything to ash!"
I lunged forward, grabbing the silver case from his hands. "I'm taking the cure!"
Charles grabbed my wrist with terrifying force. His eyes were bloodshot, his skin blistering from the freezing gas pouring into the room. "You can't leave me here, Sarah! I am your father! I gave you life!"
I looked into the eyes of the man who had turned my daughter's life into a living nightmare, who had treated our family as nothing more than biological experiments.
"You gave me a nightmare," I whispered.
I raised the butt of Detective Miller's heavy handgun and slammed it hard across Charles' jaw. He groaned, releasing my wrist, and crashed backward into the freezing mist as the heavy steel containment doors began to slam down automatically.

I threw myself under the closing steel door, sliding across the slick tile floor just as the metal barrier slammed shut with a deafening thud, locking Charles inside his own toxic tomb.
I scrambled to my feet, clutching the silver case to my chest, and ran up the stairs into the storm.
