CHAPTER 6 — THE CHOICE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The countdown echoed through the underground facility.
"Ten minutes until total structural failure."
Red emergency lights bathed the tunnels in crimson.
Concrete dust drifted from the ceiling as explosions shook Blackridge from above.
Scientists fled.
Mercenaries scrambled toward hidden escape routes.
Chaos spread faster than fire.
But Ava couldn't move.
Her eyes were locked on the monitor showing her mother, Eleanor Carter, sitting alone inside a reinforced glass cell.
For twenty years, Ava had believed she was dead.
Now she was only a few hundred feet away.
Pierce smiled.
"I told you this mission would become personal."
"You've spent your life hunting monsters."
"Now tell me... are you an investigator?"
"Or are you simply a daughter?"
Ava looked down at the keycard in her hand.
One corridor flashed LAB A.
The other flashed ARCHIVE VAULT.
One held her mother.
The other contained enough evidence to destroy the criminal empire forever.
She had only minutes.
Then...
A familiar bark echoed through the corridor.
The lead Belgian Malinois nudged Ava's hand before sprinting toward a narrow maintenance tunnel hidden behind a collapsed wall.
The other dogs followed.
Ava frowned.
"They're trying to show me something."
Ignoring Pierce's mocking laughter, she followed the dogs.
The narrow passage opened into an abandoned control room that hadn't been used in decades.
On the wall hung a faded blueprint of the entire underground complex.
Ava's heart pounded.
There wasn't just one route.
There was a forgotten emergency tunnel connecting both the detention wing and the archive vault.
Her mother had discovered it years earlier and secretly marked it with a small carved symbol—the same symbol engraved on the military whistle Ava carried.
"It was never a choice..." Ava whispered.
"Mom left me a way to save everyone."
She activated the emergency tunnel controls.
Hidden steel doors groaned open throughout the bunker.
At the same moment, prisoners trapped in underground cells began pouring into the corridors.
The mercenaries opened fire.
But the inmates fought back with desperate determination.
The loyal attack dogs charged first, forcing the gunmen into retreat.
For the first time in decades...
Blackridge Prison erupted into a full-scale rebellion.
Pierce's confident smile finally faded.
"You weren't supposed to find that tunnel."
Ava looked him straight in the eyes.
"You underestimated my mother."
Suddenly, the central computer screen flashed with a new warning.
UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.
Someone was downloading every classified file from the prison's secret servers.
Pierce stared at the screen in disbelief.
"Who's inside my system?"
A calm voice answered through the facility speakers.
"You've been watching Ava for twenty years..."
"...but you've never noticed me."
The monitor switched to a live camera.
An elderly woman stepped out of the shadows beside the main server.
It was Eleanor Carter.
She had never been a helpless prisoner.
She had spent twenty years secretly waiting for this exact moment.
Looking directly into the camera, she smiled.
"Checkmate, Samuel."
Then she pressed one red button.
Every prison cell...
Every classified document...
Every hidden camera...
And every secret inside Blackridge was instantly transmitted to law enforcement agencies and news networks across the country.
Outside the prison, dozens of helicopters suddenly appeared on the horizon.
The hunt had begun.
But Pierce wasn't planning to surrender.
From inside his jacket, he slowly pulled out a small black remote with a single flashing button.
May you like
"If I can't keep my empire..."
"...no one leaves Blackridge alive."
