Chapter 9 - THE CROWN OF NEW YORKThree days after the council betrayal, the underworld of New York City was completely rewritten.

The rival syndicates who had thought Jared vulnerable learned a terrifying lesson. By dawn following the incident, every faction that had plotted against him had surrendered their territories unconditionally. The name Kensington was no longer just feared—it was treated as absolute law.
Inside the penthouse, the sun was beginning to set, casting brilliant strokes of gold and crimson across the Manhattan skyline.
Willa stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, holding a cup of black coffee. The oversized jacket she had worn on her first night was gone, replaced by a tailored black silk blouse that matched the dark sophistication of her new life.
Footsteps approached behind her.
Jared wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin gently on her shoulder, staring out at the city lights below.
"The Moretti family formally surrendered the docks this morning," Jared murmured into her hair. "New York is completely ours."
Willa took a sip of her coffee, a faint, confident smile playing on her lips. "Good. Because I was getting tired of assassins interrupting my evening routine."
Jared chuckled, a deep, warm sound that only she was ever privileged to hear. He turned her around in his arms so she was facing him, his flinty eyes softening as they locked onto hers.
"You saved my life back there," Jared said quietly. "You didn't have to. You could have run out the back door when the lockdown started."
"And go back to hiding?" Willa raised an eyebrow, tilting her chin up. "I told you, Jared. I’m not running anymore. Besides..." She glanced down toward the corner of the room, where Ghost was fast asleep on his luxury rug, snoring softly. "Who would make sure Ghost takes his vitamins?"
Jared smiled—a real, genuine, complete smile that completely transformed his dangerous face.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box.
Willa’s breath hitched slightly. "What’s this?"
"In my world, partnerships are sealed in blood and iron," Jared said softly, opening the box to reveal a stunning, custom-crafted diamond ring flanked by two dark black sapphires—a crown fit for a queen of the shadows. "But with you, I want it to be permanent. No cages. No secrets. Just an empire built together."
Willa stared at the ring, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had terrified New York, but had given her everything he had.
She didn't hesitate.

"It’s about time you asked," Willa whispered.
Jared slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a fierce, passionate embrace as the city lights twinkled below them, sealing a bond that nothing in this world could ever break.
