Chapter 3 - THE RAT IN THE SANCTUARYThe safehouse was a fortified compound buried deep in the pine forests of upstate New York—a place known only to three people in the world.

By 3:00 AM, the rain had turned into a thick, misty fog that clung to the tall trees like a shroud.

Matteo backed the SUV into the underground garage, the heavy iron security gates grinding shut behind us. I stepped out of the vehicle, leaning heavily on a tactical cane, my eyes scanning every inch of the perimeter.

“Donovan is inside,” Matteo said, pointing toward the reinforced steel door leading to the living quarters. “He brought two medical kits and the secure comms unit.”

Donovan was my chief of security—a scarred veteran who had taken three bullets for my father fifteen years ago. If there was one man in the world I trusted with my life, it was Donovan.

We walked through the heavy blast doors into the stone-walled interior of the safehouse.

Donovan stood near the central counter, a heavy sniper rifle laid out on the table, surrounded by medical supplies. When he saw me walking under my own power, clutching a pistol, his eyes widened in genuine shock.

“Dominic!” Donovan gasped, stepping forward. “Mother of God... the news reports said you were in a coma!”

“The news reports were written by Vittorio Bellini,” I said coldly, motioning for Grace to bring Lucas into the inner bedroom. “Donovan, lock down the secondary perimeter. We move on the Bellini estate at dawn.”

Donovan hesitated. He looked at me, then looked at Grace, then at the young boy being ushered into the room.

“Dominic,” Donovan said slowly, his voice laced with concern. “Vittorio has three hundred men surrounding Long Island. The Five Families have already lined up behind him. If you walk into that estate without full family backing, it’s a massacre.”

“The Five Families are following a ghost,” I replied, sitting down at the wooden table while Grace opened a fresh medical kit. “Once I present Lucas and the DNA match proving Vanessa is my half-sister, Vittorio’s alliance collapses in ten minutes.”

Donovan didn't move toward the control console. Instead, he slowly reached down, picked up a glass of water from the counter, and took a slow sip.

“Vanessa isn't just your half-sister, Dominic,” Donovan said softly.

I froze. I slowly raised my eyes to look at my old security chief. “What did you say?”

“I said, she isn't just your half-sister,” Donovan repeated. He set the glass down, his face entirely devoid of emotion. “She’s also the biological mother of the child in that room.”

A cold, paralyzing silence descended over the safehouse.

Grace stopped mid-motion, her hand hovering over a bottle of antiseptic. Matteo drew his weapon in a split second, pointing it straight at Donovan’s chest.

“Donovan, drop your hands!” Matteo roared. “What the hell are you talking about?!”

Donovan didn't look threatened by Matteo’s gun. He stood tall, his scarred face illuminated by the flickering fluorescent light overhead.

“Elena Rossi didn't give birth to Lucas alone seven years ago,” Donovan revealed, his voice dropping into a flat, terrifying tone. “The baby born in that Chicago clinic was a surrogate, Dominic. Elena couldn't carry a child after her car crash in 2017. So Vittorio used Vanessa’s eggs and your stored genetic samples from the Moretti private fertility bank to create an heir.”

My mind reeled. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

“You're lying,” I rasped, my knuckles going white against my cane.

“I’m not lying,” Donovan said calmly. “Why do you think Vanessa recognized the boy in the ER forty-eight hours ago? Why do you think she was so desperate to transfer him to a private facility? Lucas isn't just Elena’s son, Dominic. He’s Vanessa’s son too. Genetically, he is the pure, undisputed blood heir to both the Moretti and Bellini empires.”

“And you...” I whispered, realizing the horrifying truth that had been sitting in the shadows for years. “You were the one who helped them take Elena’s samples.”

Donovan looked at me, a flicker of genuine regret passing through his old eyes.

“Vittorio paid off my daughter’s medical debt ten years ago, Dominic,” Donovan admitted softly. “I’ve been his man inside your inner circle since before your father died.”

Before Matteo could pull the trigger, the reinforced steel doors behind us let out a long, metallic hiss.

The hydraulic locks disengaged. The blast doors slowly swung open.

Standing in the misty night air outside the garage were twelve armed mercenaries in Bellini syndicate uniforms.

And standing at their center, clad in an immaculate black trench coat, her diamond necklace glinting under the security lights, was Vanessa Bellini.

She looked at me, a cold, stunning, lethal smile breaking across her red lips.

“Hello, Dominic,” Vanessa purred, stepping over the threshold into the safehouse. “Thank you for bringing my son home.”
