Chapter 5 - The Gathering StormDawn broke over Oyster Bay, painting the slate-gray Atlantic in streaks of bruised violet and gold. Inside the master suite of the Vale estate, Celeste Marlow sat at her vanity mirror, applying a final touch of crimson lipstick. Her reflection was the picture of poise—wealthy, untouchable, and radiating an effortless grace.

Yet, a subtle tremor ran through her fingers.
Dr. Crane sat in a high-backed leather chair near the fireplace, his face pale and slick with nervous sweat. He was absentmindedly rubbing his right thumb against his knuckle—over and over again.
"He didn't come back to the east wing last night," Celeste said, her voice sharp as she watched Crane in the mirror. "Gabriel’s phone is dead, Julian hasn't answered his cell since midnight, and that wretched homeless woman is still locked in the downstairs guest suite."
"Mr. Vale is not a fool, Celeste," Crane muttered, his voice shaking. "If he discovered the dampener... if he realizes what we've been doing..."
"He can't prove anything without the master medical database," Celeste interrupted, turning sharply to face him. Her eyes flashed with cold ambition. "And Julian keeps that encrypted off-site with multi-factor authentication tied to his biometric ID. Unless Julian gives it up voluntarily, Adrian has nothing."
The heavy oak doors of the master suite swung open with a resounding crash.
Celeste spun around, her rehearsed smile faltering.
Adrian walked into the room. Behind him stood Gabriel, and flanked between two armed guards was Julian Marlow—his silk robe stained with dirt, his face bruised and swollen.
Celeste stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "Adrian! What is the meaning of this? What have you done to my brother?"
Adrian walked slowly toward her, his expression entirely devoid of warmth. He didn't look like a man about to be married; he looked like an executioner stepping onto the scaffold.
Celeste’s eyes darted to Julian, then to Crane, whose head was bowed in absolute defeat. Realization hit her like a physical blow, draining the last remnants of color from her cheeks. Her breathing hitched, but she forced her chin up, slipping instantly into her defense.
"Whatever lies that filthy street beggar told you, Adrian, it isn't true," Celeste hissed, stepping forward with outstretched hands, her voice dripping with practiced honey. "Look at me! We've built an empire together. We are getting married in six weeks!"
Adrian stopped two feet away from her. He raised his hands, signing with a deliberate, agonizing slowness that forced her to read every single letter.
The wedding is still on, Celeste.
Celeste blinked, caught completely off guard by the twist. A flicker of hope returned to her eyes, though her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Adrian... you believe me?"

Adrian’s lips curved into a chilling, humorless smile. He continued signing.
I wouldn't miss the execution of my own betrayers for the world.
