CHAPTER 2 — "The Groom Smiled… Until the Missing Soldier Walked Into the Wedding."

The entire ballroom went silent.
Ethan Carter stood at the altar, his expensive suit suddenly looking like a costume on a guilty man.
The bride, Amelia, stepped back with shaking hands.
"Ethan..." she whispered. "What are they talking about?"
But Ethan wasn't looking at her.
He was staring at the two military investigators standing at the entrance.
One of them opened the folder.
"Seven years ago, Captain Daniel Brooks vanished during Operation Nightfall. His body was never found. His personal effects disappeared. Including one custom wedding ring engraved with his service number."
The little boy clutched the ring to his chest.
"My dad promised he'd come back," he cried.
Ethan forced a laugh.
"This is insane. That kid is confused. I bought that ring from a private collector."
The investigator's eyes hardened.
"Then explain why your fingerprints were found on Captain Brooks' emergency beacon."
Gasps exploded through the room.
Amelia covered her mouth.
Ethan's mother stood up quickly.
"My son would never—"
"Sit down," the investigator said coldly. "You already knew."
The room turned toward her.
Her face collapsed.
Ethan's mother began trembling.
Amelia looked horrified. "You knew?"
The investigator continued.
"Daniel Brooks didn't die in combat. He was betrayed. Someone gave away his extraction location. Someone took his ring. Someone built a new life using the money meant for Daniel's family."
Ethan's jaw tightened.
For the first time, his perfect mask cracked.
Then the little boy looked toward the doors and whispered,
"Mommy?"
A woman stepped inside.
Her dress was simple. Her face was tired. But her eyes were strong.
She was Daniel Brooks' widow.
And in her hand was a photograph.
She held it up for everyone to see.
It showed Daniel, Ethan, and two other soldiers standing together years ago.
On Daniel's finger was the same ring.
Amelia turned to Ethan.
"You told me you never served."
Ethan said nothing.
The widow walked closer.
"You left him behind," she said. "And when I asked questions, you told everyone I was crazy."
Ethan suddenly snapped.
"You have no proof!"
Then every light in the ballroom flickered.
The giant screen behind the altar turned on.
A video began playing.
It was grainy.
Shaking.
Recorded from a military body camera.
Captain Daniel Brooks appeared on screen, wounded but alive.
Then Ethan's younger face appeared beside him.
And the entire room heard Ethan say:
"Sorry, Captain. Only one of us gets to come home."
Amelia screamed.
Ethan stepped backward.
The guests stood frozen in horror.
But the worst part came next.
On the screen, Daniel looked directly into the camera and whispered:
"If my son ever sees this... tell him I fought to come home."
The little boy began sobbing.
Ethan tried to run.
But before he reached the side exit, the doors opened again.
An older man in a wheelchair rolled into the ballroom.
His face was scarred.
His body was weak.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
The widow dropped to her knees.
The little boy froze.
The man looked at Ethan and said:
May you like
"You should have made sure I was dead."
Captain Daniel Brooks was alive.
