Chapter 2 - The Ambush at Park AvenueThe heavy oak double doors of my family’s Park Avenue penthouse swung open before I could even raise my hand to knock. Standing in the foyer was housekeeper Mrs. Gable, looking visibly shaken, but behind her, stepping out from the formal drawing room, was my mother, Eleanor Whitaker. She wore a tailored St. John burgundy suit, her silver hair pulled into a sharp, flawless chignon, and her expression was a masterclass in glacial composure.

"Julian," my mother said, her voice dripping with calculated disappointment as she waved away the remaining guests lurking in the parlor. "I see you’ve finally decided to surface after humiliating our family in front of the entire Manhattan elite yesterday. Do you have any idea what it took to smooth things over with the Cartwrights?"

"Save the performance, Mother," I cut through her words, stepping past her into the grand foyer without removing my coat. "The guests are gone, the facade is cracked, and we both know the Cartwright engagement was just another one of your corporate mergers. Let’s talk about what really happened six years ago."

Eleanor didn’t flinch. She simply tilted her chin upward, her icy blue eyes narrowing. "I have no idea what hysterical nonsense you’ve picked up from that wretched street-level server, but—"

"Her name is Mara," I interrupted, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "And the quadruplets sleeping in my Tribeca apartment right now—my four sons—are your grandchildren. Did you really think you could forge a goodbye note, embezzle a quarter-million dollars into a Cayman shell company, and banish her from my life while she was pregnant without me eventually looking under the hood?"

For a microsecond—just a fraction of a second—the absolute armor around my mother’s eyes slipped. A flash of raw panic flickered across her face before she quickly masked it with haughty disdain.

"You absolute fool," my mother hissed, stepping closer. "Do you honestly believe a penniless nobody from a broken background was ever fit to carry the Whitaker name? She was a parasite clinging to our social standing. I protected you. I protected this entire legacy from being dragged down into the gutter by a girl who didn't even know who her own father was!"

"She was a human being!" I roared, the suppressed fury of six stolen years finally breaking through the dam. "She loved me for me, not for the trust fund, not for the board seats, and not for the portfolio! And you punished her for it. You robbed me of my family!"

"Your family is this house, Julian!" Eleanor shouted back, slamming her palm down on the marble console table. "And don't you dare walk around here acting like a martyr. If you think you can just march those bastards into our lives and claim your rightful place as CEO, think again. I have already convened emergency counsel. As of eight o’clock this morning, the board of directors has initiated a competency review, citing your erratic behavior over a phantom woman and unverified children. You have been temporarily stripped of your voting shares."

I stared at her, the chilling depth of her betrayal washing over me. She hadn't just stolen my past; she was actively trying to execute a coup to steal my future before I could even defend myself.

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. It was an incoming encrypted message from Elena: Mr. Whitaker, get out of the penthouse immediately. Federal marshals and family corporate security are en route with a court-ordered asset freeze and an emergency custody petition filed by your mother's legal team. They are moving to seize the Tribeca apartment right now.

My blood ran ice cold. My mother hadn't just locked me out of the company—she was coming straight for my boys.
