Chapter 4 - THE PROJECTION OF TRUTH

The entire ballroom fell into a dead, suffused silence as the high-definition projection screen filled with a crystal-clear video feed.
The video showed a luxury kitchen with Calacatta marble counters and a Viking stove.
The audio echoed loudly through the high-end Bose surround-sound speakers of the ballroom:
SCRAPE.
The terrifying, metallic sound of a cast-iron skillet dragging against a stove burner filled the air.
“Oh, dear me! My wrist just slipped,” Eleanor’s calm, rehearsed voice blasted through the room.
On the screen, five hundred high-society guests watched in vivid, horrifying detail as liquid, boiling oil was poured directly onto my back. The blood-curdling scream that followed was so raw, so horrific, that several women in the front row covered their ears and shrieked.
"Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!" Daniel screamed, rushing toward the AV booth at the side of the ballroom.
Julian Thorne stepped smoothly into Daniel’s path, placing a heavy, iron-like hand on his shoulder, pinning him in place. "Sit down, Commissioner. The show is just getting started."
The video played on.
On the screen, Daniel’s face appeared in sharp 4K resolution. He was crouching over my writhing, agonizing body on the floor.
“Look at you,” Daniel’s recorded voice purred sinisterly through the speakers. “You’re an ugly monster now, Claire. I can't live with a creature like you. Sign the divorce papers... and sign the release for your late father’s Vanguard portfolio and the Sterling logistics shares. Do it right now, and maybe Eleanor will dial 911 before you go into shock.”
"My God..." Supreme Court Justice Vance whispered, backing away from Eleanor as if she were covered in venomous snakes.
"Eleanor... Daniel... how could you?" whispered the Mayor’s wife, staring in absolute horror at the head table.
Eleanor was standing frozen, her mouth open in a silent, grotesque 'O', her hands clutching her pearls so hard the string snapped. Dozens of lustrous white pearls hit the marble floor, bouncing and rolling in every direction like tiny white teeth.
"That... that video is a fake! It’s AI! It’s deepfake technology!" Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering. "My son is a public servant! I am a philanthropist! This woman is trying to ruin us with digital fabrications!"
I stepped up onto the stage, standing right next to the massive screen displaying the frozen frame of Daniel’s sneering face.
"It’s not a deepfake, Eleanor," I said, turning my back to the audience so everyone—and every news camera—could see the 24-karat gold-lined scars running across my shoulder. "This video was captured by an encrypted transponder embedded inside the Montblanc pen Daniel forced into my hand while I was burning on your kitchen floor."
I turned back around, eyeing the terrified Deputy City Commissioner.
"But the assault isn't the best part, Daniel," I continued softly. "The best part is where you sent the money."
Daniel stopped struggling against Julian’s grip. His eyes went wide with a sudden, paralyzing terror.
"You see," I said, addressing the room, "the $42 million Daniel illegally extorted from me was routed through Apex Horizon Holdings in the Cayman Islands. And three days ago, that money was used to cover a $30 million deficit in the Greenwich Municipal Infrastructure Trust."
I looked over at State Auditor Marcus Vance, who was sitting three tables away, holding his glass of wine mid-air.
"Auditor Vance," I called out, "you signed off on the city budget audit this afternoon, didn't you? You claimed the municipal funds were fully accounted for."
Auditor Vance’s face turned gray. He slowly set his glass down, his hands trembling violently.
"What you didn't know," I said, "is that the moment Daniel touched those funds, he activated an automated tracking protocol established by the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The money he used to clear that audit wasn't clean cash. It was marked money from an ongoing federal sting operation targeting municipal corruption in Fairfield County."
Right on cue, the heavy oak doors at the back of the grand ballroom were pushed open once again.

This time, it wasn't a socialite or a billionaire who entered.
It was a tactical squad of six Federal Bureau of Investigation agents wearing dark blue jackets with yellow 'FBI' lettering, led by two stern-faced Assistant United States Attorneys.
