Chapter 5 - THE ASHES OF THE PASTBy evening, the townhouse was blissfully quiet.

The federal marshals had cleared out, the security cameras were reset to my exclusive administrator profile, and my father was sitting at the kitchen island, nursing a cup of black coffee while reviewing the final audit reports.

“You handled that like a seasoned prosecutor, sweetheart,” my father said, looking up with a proud, warm smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. “I almost didn’t need to show up at all.”

I smiled faintly, pouring myself a cup of tea. “I needed you there, Dad. Not for the legal muscle—I had all the evidence for that. I needed you there because seeing you walk through that door was the final closure I needed to know I was never going back.”

My father’s expression softened, the hard edge of the federal prosecutor melting away into pure paternal warmth. He stood up and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into a tight, protective embrace.

“You’re safe now, Audrey,” he murmured into my hair. “No one will ever lay a hand on you again. Vantage Financial is completely imploding. Julian’s boss has already handed over the internal whistleblowing logs, and the SEC has frozen all of Julian’s personal accounts. By morning, he won't even be able to afford a public defender.”

“Let him try,” I whispered, pulling back and looking at my reflection in the kitchen window.

The bruising under my jaw was still dark and angry, a stark reminder of the violence I had survived. But as I touched the skin, I didn't feel fear. I didn't feel small. I felt invincible.

“What are your plans for the townhouse?” my father asked, gesturing around the open-concept living room. “You want to sell it? Move back closer to me in Washington?”

“No,” I said, shaking my head with a slow, confident smile. “I’m keeping it. And I’m renaming the title solely in my name by tomorrow morning. This isn’t Julian’s house, and it certainly isn't the Sterlings'. It’s mine. Every single brick of it.”

My father grinned, tossing a set of encrypted flash drives onto the counter. “Good. Because the financial cleanup is just beginning. Julian’s trial is going to be front-page news, and guess who the lead forensic investigator assigned to the prosecution is?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Me?”

May you like

“You,” my father confirmed. “The DOJ officially appointed you as the lead senior forensic accountant on the Sterling-Vantage fraud case twenty minutes ago.”

A cold, thrilling surge of adrenaline rushed through my veins. Julian had tried to reduce me to a silenced, bruised housewife hidden behind green concealer. Instead, the federal government had just handed me the gavel to destroy him completely.
