Chapter 20 - The Horizon

The following morning broke clear and cloudless, the kind of perfect southern spring day that made you feel like anything was possible.

I woke up early, before the rest of the house stirring, and walked down to the quiet courtyard garden with a cup of black coffee. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the sweet scent of blooming azaleas and freshly cut grass.

I sat down on a stone bench near the fountain where Leo and Noah loved to play, pulling a small, smooth white pebble from my pocket—the very same one Noah had handed me from the garden path days earlier. I turned it over in my fingers, feeling its weight, remembering every jagged edge of the road that had led us to this exact spot.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind me.

Evelyn walked up, wearing a light linen robe, her hair tied back loosely, holding a steaming mug of coffee in her hand. She sat down beside me on the bench, leaning her head against my shoulder without saying a word.

"Penny for your thoughts," she whispered softly after a moment of quiet companionship.

I looked down at the white pebble in my palm, then opened my hand so she could see it resting against my skin.

"I was just thinking about Terminal 4," I said, a faint smile touching my lips. "And how crazy it is that a single mechanical delay on a flight I cursed to high heaven saved the rest of my life."

Evelyn smiled, wrapping her fingers around mine, pressing the small stone safely between our palms.

"Some delays aren't roadblocks, Marcus," she said, looking out toward the horizon where the sun was beginning to flood the gardens with golden light. "Sometimes, they're the universe forcing you to stop running... so you can finally find your way home."

What is your favorite plot twist in Marcus and Evelyn's journey, and how would you have handled Eleanor if you were in their shoes?
