Chapter 19 - THE GREEN SHOOTS

The mint plant on the mahogany desk in the Valente estate had grown three new leaves by Saturday morning, their bright green edges catching the pale autumn light that filtered through the tall west window.

Dominic Valente sat at his desk in the empty study. There were no shipping reports spread out before him. There were no financial ledgers, no bank drafts, and no lists of names to be checked off before the morning briefing.

On the corner of the blotter lay the child’s drawing of the tall man with no mouth, flattened beneath the heavy crystal paperweight. Beside it sat the gray plush rabbit with the yellow-threaded seam, its button eyes catching the light like small, dark beads of glass.

He reached out, his fingers brushing the edge of the paper where the little girl had written Mr. Dominic in uneven, schoolchild letters.

For the first time in fifteen years, the house was completely silent. But it wasn't the heavy, suffocating silence of a fortress built on secrets and long-forgotten debts. It was the quiet of an empty room waiting for someone to open the door.

He didn't call the agency for a replacement maid. He didn't summon the enforcers from the North Philadelphia crew. He simply picked up the small silver watering can from the tray, tilted it slightly, and watched as a clear stream of water soaked into the dark, rich earth around the base of the mint plant, making the green leaves shine under the morning sun.
