Chapter 9 - THE NEW ERA OF MILANSix months later.

The morning sun cast a warm, golden glow across the restored marble courtyard of Villa Moretti.
The scars of the siege had been completely erased. The tall iron gates were open, no longer a fortress of fear, but the entrance to the new headquarters of the Mercer-Moretti Foundation—a international charitable organization funded by the recovered two hundred million euros, dedicated to protecting vulnerable women and children across Europe.
The Twelve Crime Families of Milan no longer existed in their old form. With Don Ricci and the rogue bosses serving life sentences following the Interpol trials, Alessandro had completely restructured the syndicate, transforming its assets into legitimate global logistics, real estate, and shipping enterprises.
I stood on the second-floor balcony of the grand suite, wearing a simple, elegant ivory silk dress, drinking a cup of warm coffee, looking down at the manicured gardens below.
In the center of the lawn, four-year-old Emma was running through the sprinklers with a golden retriever puppy Alessandro had bought her for her birthday. Her laughter carried clearly through the crisp morning air, pure, happy, and entirely free of shadows.
The heavy French doors opened behind me.
Alessandro walked out onto the balcony, wearing a tailored charcoal suit without a tie, his dark hair catching the golden sunlight. He stepped behind me, sliding his arms around my waist, resting his chin gently against my shoulder.
“You’re thinking again,” he murmured into my ear, his breath warm against my skin.
“I was just thinking about the day I walked down this corridor,” I smiled, leaning back against his broad chest. “When Vivian slapped me, and I was terrified I’d lose my ninety-euro-a-day job.”
Alessandro chuckled softly, a deep, resonant sound. “Vivian is currently doing three hundred hours of community service at a shelter in Naples. I doubt she’ll be slapping anyone ever again.”
He turned me around in his arms, looking down into my eyes with that piercing, grey gaze that had once terrified me, but now brought a profound sense of safety and belonging.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy-blue velvet box.
My breath hitched in my throat. “Alessandro...”
He opened the box. Inside sat a simple, breathtaking ring—a flawless white diamond set in a band of dark, polished platinum, delicately carved with an intricate olive branch design.
“I am done with political engagements, Claire,” Alessandro said softly, taking my hand in his, his voice filled with an earnest, deep emotion. “I am done with marriages built on power, territory, and bloodlines. I want a home. I want a family. And I want to spend the rest of my life protecting you and Emma.”
Tears of pure happiness welled up in my eyes. I looked down at the ring, then up into the face of the man who had reshaped his entire world to give us a future.
“Is that an offer of employment, Mr. Moretti?” I teased softly through my tears.
“It’s a lifetime contract, Mrs. Bennett,” Alessandro smiled gently. “And the salary includes everything I own.”
May you like
“Yes,” I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, breathtaking kiss that wiped away the last remnants of the ghosts, the lies, and the pain of the past. “Yes, Alessandro. Absolutely yes.”
Down on the lawn, Emma looked up at the balcony, seeing us holding each other. She held up her blue rabbit in her little hand and cheered happily, the golden puppy barking beside her.
