Chapter 9 - The Courtroom ShowdownThe emergency injunction hearing at the Wake County Courthouse was packed to capacity.

Margaret Walker sat at the plaintiff’s table, dressed in her immaculate charcoal-gray suit, her posture stiff and unyielding. She looked like a queen surveying her kingdom, utterly confident that her trap had sprung shut. Beside her sat Julian Vance, smugly reviewing a stack of legal briefs.
Across the aisle sat Ethan, flanked by Marcus Vance. Ethan’s wrists were free, but the dark circles under his eyes bore witness to twenty-four hours in a holding cell.
Judge Robert Sterling, a no-nonsense magistrate with decades on the bench, adjusted his glasses and looked down at the documents before him.
“Mr. Vance,” Judge Sterling said, addressing Julian. “Your client has filed an emergency motion for asset forfeiture and criminal bind-over against Mr. Ethan Walker, alleging corporate embezzlement. However, opposing counsel has just submitted a massive evidentiary packet containing digital forensics, IP logs, and an audio recording.”
Julian’s smug expression flickered for a split second.
“Your Honor, those files are unverified digital artifacts—likely fabricated by the defense to—”
“Play the audio, Marcus,” Judge Sterling commanded.
Marcus stepped forward, plugging a small speaker into the courtroom audio system and hitting play.
The courtroom echoed with Margaret Walker’s unmistakable, aristocratic voice:
“I don’t care how you do it, just route the four hundred thousand into that offshore account and attach my son’s electronic signature. He needs to learn that he is nothing without this family. Do it now.”
The color drained entirely from Margaret’s face. She jerked her head around, staring in horror at her own attorney.
“Objection! That’s inadmissible hearsay! That’s an illegal wiretap!” Julian shouted, slamming his hand on the table.
“It’s not a wiretap, Counselor,” Marcus smiled sharply. “It’s an automated cloud-sync backup from Mrs. Walker’s own home router, legally obtained and authenticated by our forensic expert this morning. Furthermore, we have the IP logs proving the transfer was initiated from her home office while Ethan was five hundred miles away in Canada.”
Judge Sterling stared down from the bench, his expression turning to thunder.
“Mrs. Walker,” the judge said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “Did you authorize this fraudulent transfer and file a false police report against your own son?”
Margaret stood up, her composure completely shattered, her hands trembling violently.
“Your Honor… you don’t understand! He was being manipulated by that woman! He was going to destroy everything I built! I had to protect the family estate!”
“Sit down, Mrs. Walker,” Judge Sterling barked, banging his gavel so hard the sound echoed off the high vaulted ceiling. “You have committed perjury, filing a false police report, and systematic corporate fraud. Bailiff, arrest Margaret Walker.”
Two bailiffs stepped forward immediately, taking Margaret by the arms.

Margaret let out a choked gasp as the cold steel handcuffs snapped around her wrists—the exact same cuffs she had engineered for her own son just twenty-four hours earlier. As she was hauled out of the courtroom, she locked eyes with Ethan one last time. Her eyes weren't filled with anger anymore; they were empty, hollow, and defeated.
Ethan didn’t look away. He didn't smile, and he didn't gloat. He simply watched the architect of his family’s misery reap what she had sown.
