Chapter 3 - The Traitor Within

“Mr. Miller?”

Claire’s voice broke through my tunnel vision. She walked back into the office, holding a stack of security printouts and a cup of black coffee she desperately thought I needed. Her eyes darted to my pale, sweat-slicked face. “The police are securing the perimeter. Chief Henderson says the blood belongs to a woman matching Emma’s description, but they haven't recovered a body yet. What... what are we going to do?”

I looked at Claire. Really looked at her.

For seven years, she had been my shadow. She anticipated my every move, knew my schedule before I did, managed my schedule, my travel, my private accounts, my secure communications. She was unfailingly loyal, quiet, and completely invisible—the perfect corporate assistant.

Too perfect.

“Claire,” I said softly, walking slowly toward her. My voice didn't carry anger anymore; it carried a terrifying, icy stillness.

“Yes, Mr. Miller?” she asked, stepping back slightly, her professional composure cracking just a fraction.

“How did security know the twins were in the lobby at 5:00 AM?”

She blinked, her eyes darting toward the window. “The... the night watchman called my desk phone. He said two kids were wandering near the elevators.”

“My direct desk phone?” I asked, tilting my head. “My direct extension isn’t listed in the directory, Claire. Not for night watchmen. Only executive board members and... my executive assistant have that number.”

Claire’s throat bobbed as she swallowed hard. “I... I must have given it to security months ago for emergency protocols. You know that.”

“And how did the caller on the secure line—the one using my father’s exact cadence—know that the twins were in my office eating pancakes within ten minutes of them arriving?” I stopped three feet away from her, towering over her slight frame.

Claire’s breathing hitched. She tried to smile, but it looked like a grimace. “Mr. Miller, are you accusing me? After everything I’ve done to protect this company—”

“You didn’t protect the company, Claire,” I interrupted, pulling the micro-perforated paper out of my pocket and holding it up. “You protected him. W.M. William Miller. Or his proxy. You’ve been leaking my internal acquisitions to the Heritage Foundation for the past three years. And tonight, you let the assassins into the building.”

Before Claire could reach into her blazer pocket, I lunged forward with the speed of a striking predator. I pinned her wrist against the mahogany bookshelf, knocking a heavy crystal paperweight to the floor.

Her professional facade instantly shattered. A wicked, desperate grin spread across her lips.

“You’re too late, Jason!” she hissed, laughing hysterically. “The transfer documents were queued up for automatic signature at midnight! Even if you kill me right now, your precious capital fund, your towers, your legacy—it all belongs to the Foundation! And Emma? Emma is already feeding the fish!”

Suddenly, a blinding flash illuminated the entire penthouse office.

A deafening explosion rocked the Emerald Tower, blowing out the reinforced glass windows in a magnificent cascade of glittering shards. Alarms wailed across Manhattan, and the floor violently bucked beneath our feet.

Smoke poured into the room.

And from the shadows of the private elevator corridor, a figure stepped out, clapping slowly, flanked by four masked mercenaries holding automatic weapons.

It wasn't a ghost. It was a man I thought I had buried years ago.
