Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT VISITORS

By 2:00 AM, I was stabilized in a private VIP recovery suite on the top floor, courtesy of Liam’s family insurance and immense financial leverage. The MRI results were devastatingly clear: the impact had aggravated the old scar tissue, causing a severe hematoma that compressed the spinal nerves. Whether it was permanent or temporary, the neurosurgeon couldn't say yet.
What he did say, however, was that my nervous system was screaming in distress.
The door to my suite clicked open. I expected Liam, who had stepped out thirty minutes ago to take a phone call from his legal team. Instead, the sharp click of high heels announced a far more dangerous visitor.
Mother.
Helen walked in looking like she had just stepped out of a high-society editorial spread, despite the hour. Her designer coat was immaculate, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed, but her eyes were darting around the room with feral panic.
“Claire,” she hissed, closing the door and locking it with a sharp click. “What in God’s name do you think you are playing at?”
I stared at her from the adjustable hospital bed, my chest heaving. “Playing at? Mother, your golden child just tried to paralyze me permanently in front of two hundred people!”
“Keep your voice down!” Helen snapped, rushing to the side of the bed and leaning over me, her manicured fingers clawing at the blanket. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done? The police are already making inquiries. TMZ has picked up rumors of a ‘family altercation’ at the Vance-Sinclair engagement party. Brooke is sitting at home, catatonic and weeping, because her entire life is unraveling because of your petty, jealous outbursts!”
“My jealous outbursts?” I let out a harsh, incredulous laugh that morphed into a dry sob. “She shoved me! Liam saw it! Two hundred witnesses saw it!”
“Liam is blinded by shock and manipulated by your sob story!” Helen hissed, her face contorting into an ugly snarl that she usually kept hidden behind charity galas and society columns. “Listen to me very carefully, Claire. You are going to sign a statement tomorrow morning. You are going to tell the detectives that you had a sudden vertigo spell, that you lost your balance trying to adjust your own footrests, and that Brooke desperately lunged forward to catch you. You will clear her name.”
“And if I don't?” I challenged, my eyes locking onto hers with a cold fury that made her step back half an inch.
Helen leaned in close, her breath smelling of expensive wine and peppermint. “If you don't, I will make sure the world knows the truth about Lake Geneva. I’ll make sure everyone knows why you were driving that night, who was actually in control of the vehicle, and what secret you were trying to bury in the dark. Do you really want to open that Pandora’s box, Claire? Because Brooke might go down, but she will drag you straight into the abyss with her.”
Before I could answer, the door handle rattled violently.

Helen froze. The lock clicked open, and Liam walked in, holding a steaming cup of black coffee in one hand and his phone in the other.
The temperature in the room dropped to absolute zero the second Liam’s eyes landed on Helen leaning over my bed.
