Chapter 7 - The Mojave Citadel

The black armored SUV tore through the desolate expanse of the Mojave Desert, its high-beam headlights cutting slicing beams through a swirling wall of midnight sand.

Inside the climate-controlled cabin, Julian Vance sat in the back seat, nursing a glass of scotch, his expression dark and thunderous. Two surviving elite operatives sat in the front, their rifles resting across their knees, eyes glued to the digital tactical map glowing on the dashboard.

“Sweep every perimeter sensor around Facility Nine,” Julian ordered coldly. “If he thinks he can follow us out here, he’s walking into a titanium meat grinder.”

Miles ahead, rising out of the barren desert floor like a brutalist monolith, stood Facility Nine—a subterranean bio-research complex hidden beneath an abandoned Cold War radar installation. Its reinforced concrete perimeter walls were topped with automated turret systems and barbed wire, glowing under harsh amber floodlights.

As the SUV approached the heavy steel blast gates, the driver hit the automated comms button.

“This is transport unit Vanguard-One. Open the gates.”

Static hissed from the speaker. No response.

“Facility Nine, do you copy? Open the gates.”

Still nothing. Only the howling desert wind whistling across the desolate flats.

The driver frowned, shifting the heavy vehicle into park just ten feet from the massive steel barrier. “Sir, the automated relay isn't responding. The local override must be offline.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed. A cold knot of unease twisted in his stomach. “Check the manual security log.”

Before the driver could reach for the panel, the floodlights illuminating the blast gates suddenly flickered, sputtered, and died.

Absolute, suffocating darkness swallowed the desert.

“Get us out of here,” Julian snarled, his composure finally cracking. “Reverse! Reverse now!”

Before the driver could slam the gearshift into reverse, a deafening explosion ripped through the sand directly behind them. A massive, heavy-duty freight truck—stolen from Nolan’s own Long Beach terminal fleet—slammed into the rear of the SUV with the unstoppable kinetic force of a freight train, crushing the chassis and driving the armored vehicle hard against the steel blast gates.

The doors of the SUV jammed instantly, trapping Julian and his men inside a crushed metal tomb.

Through the shattered front windshield, stepping calmly out of the swirling desert dust with a submachine gun slung across his chest and the leather ledger tucked under his arm, came Nolan.
