Chapter 10 - The Unbroken RoadThat evening, the family sat together on the back veranda as the sun dipped below the Manhattan skyline, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of violet and orange.

Nina sat on Douglas’s lap, holding a sketchbook and drawing a picture of a black car, a little girl, and an angel with her uncle’s face.

“Uncle Douglas?” Nina asked, looking up.

“Yes, sweetie?”

“Are you ever going to be too busy for us again?”

Douglas wrapped his arms tightly around her, looking past her to meet his sister’s warm, loving gaze across the table.

“Never, Nina,” Douglas whispered, his voice filled with absolute conviction. “Not in this lifetime.”
