Chapter 4 - The Brooklyn Trap

Midnight at the Brooklyn Navy Yard was eerie. Rain dripped from rusting metal girders, echoing through the cavernous space of Warehouse 14.
I walked inside alone, my footsteps echoing against the damp concrete floor. In my hand, I carried a single black metallic USB drive containing the decryption master sequence.
In the center of the warehouse, illuminated by a single hanging spotlight, was Daniel, tied to a wooden chair, mouth taped shut, eyes wide with terror.
Standing in the shadows was Vanessa, wearing a dark trench coat, flanked by three heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear.
"You actually came alone," Vanessa sneered, stepping into the light. "I guess you still have some pathetic sentimental feelings for your useless ex-husband."
"I don't give a damn about Daniel," I said clearly, holding up the USB drive. "I came for my company."
"Hand it over," Vanessa demanded, extending her hand.
"Not so fast," I replied, holding the drive over a deep, open drainage grate on the floor. "You step any closer without releasing Daniel, and this drive goes down into thirty feet of toxic sludge. You'll never get the encryption keys."
Vanessa paused, her eyes narrowing. "You're bluffing."
"Try me, Vanessa. Or should I call you Ms. Halloway?"
Vanessa’s expression darkened instantly. "So your old man told you."
"My father told me your father died broke and disgraced in a federal penitentiary," I said coldly. "And you're about to meet the exact same fate."
"Enough talk!" Vanessa signaled her men. "Grab her!"
Before the mercenaries could move a muscle, the giant industrial skylights above the warehouse shattered into thousands of glass fragments.
Tear gas canisters slammed into the concrete floor, exploding into dense clouds of white smoke!
"FBI! NOBODY MOVE!"
Helicopters roared overhead, searchlights cutting through the darkness. Fully armed SWAT operatives descended on ropes through the shattered roof, flashbangs detonating with deafening booms.
Vanessa gasped, dropping to her knees, choking on the tear gas. "How?! How did you bypass the perimeter security?!"
I pulled a pair of high-tech noise-canceling earplugs from my pocket and smiled down at her through the smoke.
"Did you really think my father and I wouldn't track the signal from the video you sent?" I yelled over the din of rotor blades. "The moment you sent that video, my father's forensic team traced the IP address back to this exact warehouse!"
The mercenaries dropped their weapons, raising their hands in surrender as SWAT officers tackled them to the ground.
Agent Miller rushed in, arresting Vanessa and pulling her up by her arms.
"Vanessa Halloway," Miller declared, "you are under arrest for extortion, kidnapping, terrorism against financial infrastructure, and conspiracy."
As Vanessa was dragged past me, she glared at me with pure hatred. "You ruined everything! We were supposed to take everything you had!"
"You forgot one thing, Vanessa," I whispered in her ear as she passed. "Money bought you luxury. But intelligence bought me freedom."
I walked over to Daniel and ripped the tape off his mouth.
"Emily! Oh God, Emily, you saved me!" Daniel sobbed, tears streaming down his face. "I'm so sorry! I was foolish! Vanessa tricked me! Please, take me back, we can rebuild! I love you!"
I looked down at the man I had once shared a bed with, the man who had smiled in court as he tried to drain my life's work.
"I didn't save you for love, Daniel," I said softly.
May you like
"Then... then why?" he stammered.
"Because," I replied, pointing to Agent Miller who was walking over with another pair of cuffs, "you still have to face trial for federal fraud."
