Chapter 6 - The Ransom Note in the SnowNathan crossed the room in two strides, dropping to his knees in front of Ella. The glass crunched beneath his knees, but he didn't feel it.

"Ella! Ella, look at me! Where is Grace?" Nathan shouted over the howling wind, grabbing her shoulders gently.

Ella looked up, her face stained with tears, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror. She held out the crumpled piece of paper. "A man... a man broke through the window. He had a scarf over his face. He said... he said if Mr. Cole didn't drop the custody case and surrender his shares by midnight, we'd never see the baby alive again."

Julian snatched the paper out of Ella’s hand, his eyes scanning the crude block letters scrawled in black marker.

“Drop the kids, drop the case, or the baby feeds the snow.”

"This isn't just a kidnapping," Julian whispered, his face draining of all color. "This is a corporate hit disguised as a ransom. Someone on your board—or someone tied to your corporate restructuring—wants you out of Cole Industries so badly they're willing to kill a ten-month-old baby to do it."

Nathan stood up slowly. The grief, the sorrow, the numbness that had paralyzed him for five years instantly evaporated, replaced by a cold, lethal fury.

"Call the police," Julian urged, reaching for his phone.

"No," Nathan said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "If we call Miller, the media finds out within five minutes. The kidnapper gets spooked, and Grace dies."

"Then what do we do, Nathan?" Eleanor asked, her voice laced with rare panic. "We can't just play along with extortion!"

"Yes, we can," Nathan replied, walking toward his walk-in closet. When he stepped back out into the room, he was holding a heavy black leather holster and sliding a sleek, matte-black Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol into place beneath his tailored wool coat.

Eleanor gasped. "Nathan! You're a CEO, not a hitman! You can't hunt down an armed criminal!"

"Watch me," Nathan said coldly. He turned to Mrs. Gable, who was clutching a weeping Ella to her chest. "Keep her safe. Lock every door, arm the perimeter security system, and do not open this door for anyone except me."

"Mr. Cole... please don't go," Ella sobbed, stretching her small hand out toward him. "Don't leave us."

Nathan stopped at the shattered window. He looked at Ella, seeing the exact same look of desperate, abandoned pleading she had given him in the snow outside the café.

"I didn't let you freeze last night, Ella," Nathan said softly, his voice cutting through the wind. "And I'm not leaving Grace out in the cold tonight. I'm coming back."

With that, Nathan vaulted through the shattered second-story window, grabbing onto the thick ivy vines that scaled the mansion's brick exterior, and dropped silently into the freezing snow below.
