Chapter 9 - The New EmpireSix months later, the Chicago underworld had undergone a seismic transformation.

With the Russian Bratva fractured and leaderless following Viktor Vance’s permanent disappearance, the Duca syndicate consolidated absolute control over the Great Lakes shipping corridors. Law enforcement agencies, thoroughly cleaned out of corrupt officials during Alessandro's internal purge, no longer bothered looking too closely at the Duca estate's business dealings.

Yet, despite the immense power and fear his name commanded across the Midwest, Alessandro had changed.

The cold, ruthless machine of a man who had once ruled through terror alone had softened where it mattered most. Every evening at precisely six o'clock, he locked his office doors, put away his ledgers, and walked down to the garden.

There, sitting on the emerald lawn with Lily and Emma, the feared mafia boss could be found meticulously re-tying a lost shoe lace or helping sew a button back onto a doll's dress using a plastic needle.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline painting the clouds in shades of gold and crimson, Lily tugged on her father’s sleeve.

“Papa?” she asked innocently.

“Yes, my love?” Alessandro smiled, kneeling down beside her.

“Mommy is watching us from the stars, right?” Lily pointed up at the first bright evening star twinkling in the twilight sky. “And she’s happy now because we’re safe.”

Alessandro pulled both Lily and Emma close into his arms, resting his chin gently against his daughter’s hair. His eyes shimmered with a quiet, hard-earned peace.

“Yes, princess,” Alessandro whispered softly, looking up toward the endless sky. “She’s watching. And we’re never going to let go.”
