Chapter 5 - The Bride’s UltimatumBy noon, the Whitmore name wasn't just disgraced—it was radioactive.

The front page of every major news outlet featured a split-screen photo: on the left, my brother Preston in handcuffs being led out of the Whitmore Hotel; on the right, the SEC seal announcing a federal investigation into Whitmore Enterprises for fifty million dollars in corporate fraud.
I sat in my quiet suburban kitchen, sipping black coffee, watching the news coverage on mute while Sophie colored peacefully at the kitchen table, her white bandage looking like a tiny crown of resilience.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
Not a polite knock. A frantic, pounding assault on the wood.
I stood up, walking cautiously to the front door, and pulled it open.
Standing on my porch was Chloe, Preston’s bride. The million-dollar wedding dress was gone, replaced by an expensive silk tracksuit, her mascara running down her cheeks in dark streaks. All her haughty aristocratic elegance had completely vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic.
"Evelyn," she gasped, grabbing my forearm before I could step back. "You have to help me. You have to call the federal agents back."
I looked down at her hand, slowly prying her fingers off my arm. "Help you, Chloe? Last night, you watched my eight-year-old daughter bleed on your ivory aisle runner and complained about the carpet. Why on earth would I help you?"
"Because all of Preston’s assets have been frozen!" she sobbed, tears spilling over her designer cheekbones. "The bank accounts, the penthouses, the wedding gifts, the trust funds! They seized everything this morning! I’m legally tied to him. The prosecutors are looking at me as a co-conspirator for laundering money through my bridal boutique!"
"Play stupid games, win stupid prizes," I quoted softly, leaning against the doorframe. "You chose the golden boy because of his last name. You wanted the crown without earning the kingdom. Now you get to share his cell."
Chloe’s expression twisted instantly from pathetic begging to vicious fury. The mask slipped completely.
"You think you've won, don't you?" she hissed, stepping close, her breath smelling of cheap champagne and desperation. "You think destroying Preston and ruining our family makes you powerful? You’re nothing! A single mother living in a rented townhouse! Without the Whitmore name, you are absolute garbage!"
I smiled, calm and unbothered. "Good thing I’m burning that name to ash, then."
Before Chloe could scream another insult, a black SUV pulled up to my curb. Two men in dark suits stepped out, walking briskly up my walkway.
"Mrs. Chloe Whitmore?" the lead agent asked, flashing federal badges.
Chloe froze, turning pale as paper.
"I'm Special Agent Miller, IRS Criminal Investigation Division," the agent continued smoothly. "We have a few questions regarding the three million dollars transferred into your boutique’s accounts from offshore shell companies yesterday morning. Please come with us."

As Chloe was led away down my walkway, weeping hysterically into her manicured hands, I closed the front door softly.
Peace. Real, absolute peace.
