CHAPTER 4 — "THE MEN I BURIED WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN."

The silence after Don Onofre's confession felt heavier than the mountains themselves.

No one spoke.

The morning breeze rustled through the pine trees, but even nature seemed to pause.

Carmen stared into the old rancher's weathered face, searching for some sign that he was joking.

She found none.

Luisa broke the silence first.

"You... buried them?"

Onofre slowly nodded.

"At least..."

"I believed I did."

Ana Clara instinctively moved closer to her mother, gripping the edge of Carmen's faded sweater.

"Mom..."

"I'm scared."

Carmen wrapped both arms around her youngest daughter.

"So am I."

But inside, another thought had already begun to grow.

If strangers were willing to travel deep into these forgotten mountains...

Then whatever lay beneath the ranch was worth far more than anyone had imagined.

That afternoon, Onofre finally told them a story he had carried alone for more than two decades.

"I was twenty-eight."

"I worked for a geological survey company."

"We weren't looking for gold."

"We weren't looking for silver."

"We were hired to map underground water."

He paused before continuing.

"One day..."

"Our equipment detected a large underground chamber beneath these hills."

"The company ordered us to stop digging immediately."

Luisa frowned.

"Why?"

"Because someone from the capital arrived before sunset."

"They carried military identification."

"They forced every worker to leave."

"And the next morning..."

"The entire site had disappeared behind armed guards."

Carmen listened carefully.

"Who owned the land?"

"No one important."

"Just poor farming families."

"What happened to them?"

Onofre looked toward the valley.

"They were offered almost nothing."

"When they refused to sell..."

"Their wells dried up."

"Their livestock vanished."

"Some houses mysteriously caught fire."

"Others simply disappeared."

His voice grew quieter.

"No newspaper ever reported it."

Three days later...

Everything changed forever.

"I came back after dark."

"I wanted to collect my tools."

Instead...

"I found six men loading heavy wooden crates into military trucks."

"They weren't carrying mining equipment."

"They were carrying documents."

"Metal boxes."

"And old leather-bound books."

Luisa blinked.

"Books?"

Onofre nodded.

"Hundreds of them."

"It looked more like an archive than a mine."

He had watched from behind a fallen cedar tree.

One of the workers complained loudly.

"This belongs in the National Museum."

Another man answered immediately.

"Not anymore."

Before dawn...

The convoy disappeared.

Then explosions echoed through the valley.

When the smoke cleared...

Every entrance to the underground chamber had been destroyed.

Officially...

Nothing had ever existed there.

"But that's not why I'm afraid."

Onofre's voice became almost a whisper.

"The real nightmare came two nights later."

He had returned with three close friends.

They planned to search the destroyed tunnel.

Instead...

They discovered four bodies lying beside the collapsed entrance.

All wore expensive tactical uniforms.

Each had been executed with a single gunshot.

"No identification."

"No wallets."

"No fingerprints."

"It was as though someone wanted them erased from history."

Carmen swallowed hard.

"And you buried them?"

Onofre slowly nodded.

"We were terrified."

"We believed whoever killed them would return."

"So we dug four graves beneath the old cedar grove."

"No crosses."

"No names."

"We swore never to speak of it again."

For twenty-two years...

He had kept that promise.

Until now.

Late that evening...

The family gathered around the fireplace.

No one had much appetite.

Ana Clara quietly colored pictures in an old notebook while Luisa reread one of Rafael's journals.

Suddenly...

A folded sheet slipped from between the pages.

She frowned.

"Mom..."

"I don't remember seeing this before."

Carmen unfolded the yellowed paper.

It wasn't a diary page.

It was a hand-drawn map.

Old.

Very old.

Across the top, written in Rafael's familiar handwriting, were six words:

'Never trust the first map you find.'

Below the sentence...

Two maps had been drawn.

The first showed the ranch exactly as it existed today.

The second...

Hidden beneath a thin layer of pencil shading...

Revealed something completely different.

Underground tunnels.

Hidden chambers.

A large circular room directly beneath their house.

At the very center...

Rafael had drawn a red X.

Beneath it he had written only one sentence.

"The truth sleeps here."

Carmen's heart pounded.

She had lived beside Rafael for thirty-two years.

Yet he had never mentioned this.

Not once.

The next morning...

Before sunrise...

Carmen, Luisa, and Onofre carefully uncovered the iron hatch again.

The rusted handle groaned loudly as Onofre pulled with all his strength.

Nothing.

It refused to move.

Luisa fetched an iron crowbar from the shed.

Together...

They pushed.

Pulled.

Strained.

Finally...

A deafening metallic crack echoed through the valley.

The ancient hatch shifted.

A blast of icy air rushed upward.

The smell was unlike anything Carmen had ever experienced.

Not decay.

Not mold.

Something older.

Dry.

Ancient.

As though the chamber had remained sealed for centuries.

Onofre aimed his flashlight into the darkness.

Stone steps disappeared into the earth.

One by one...

The beams revealed carved walls.

Symbols.

Columns.

Perfectly preserved masonry.

This wasn't an abandoned cellar.

It wasn't a mine.

It was something far older.

Much older.

Ana Clara whispered from behind them,

"Mom..."

"Who built that?"

No one answered.

Because no one knew.

Before anyone could descend...

The distant rumble of engines echoed through the mountains.

Not one vehicle.

Several.

Onofre immediately switched off the flashlight.

Dust rose along the winding road leading toward the ranch.

Within minutes...

Three black SUVs appeared around the bend.

Behind them came the same government sedan Carmen had fled months earlier.

The vehicles stopped in formation.

Doors opened simultaneously.

Men and women wearing government identification stepped out.

Among them stood Attorney Verónica Salgado.

Beside her was CPS investigator Esteban Ruiz.

And behind them...

Six heavily armed private security officers.

Verónica adjusted her blazer before speaking.

"Carmen María."

"We finally found you."

Carmen instinctively stepped in front of her daughters.

"You have no right to be here."

Verónica calmly held up a sealed court order.

"I have every right."

"This property is now under federal investigation."

Carmen froze.

"Federal investigation?"

"For what?"

Verónica looked past Carmen...

Directly at the open iron hatch.

Her expression changed.

For the first time...

She looked genuinely shocked.

Then, almost involuntarily, she whispered three words that made Onofre's blood run cold.

"They opened it..."

One of the security officers immediately grabbed a radio.

His voice shook.

"Control..."

"This is Alpha Team."

"The chamber has been breached."

"We repeat..."

"The chamber has been opened."

Far away...

Inside a secure government facility...

An elderly man listening to the transmission slowly stood from his chair.

His face turned pale.

He whispered a name that had supposedly disappeared from history decades earlier.

"No..."

"Project Genesis..."

May you like

"...has just awakened."
