Chapter 7 - The Trap Is SprungThe next morning, the board meeting at Lawson Tower was scheduled for 9:00 AM sharp.

Vance Sterling sat at the head of the table, flanked by two corporate lawyers and three jittery board members. He had already drafted the press release announcing his hostile takeover and the restructuring of Lawson Developments.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Thomas Lawson walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual charcoal suit. He wore a crisp, tailored navy blazer, his posture straight, his expression an absolute mask of corporate coldness. Behind him walked his chief legal counsel, carrying a heavy steel briefcase.

“You’re late, Thomas,” Vance smirked, tapping his gold Rolex. “And judging by your outfit, you’ve finally realized it’s time to surrender.”

“Not quite, Vance,” Thomas said smoothly, taking his seat opposite his rival. “I believe we have an agenda to get through. You called for a vote of no confidence based on my alleged financial instability and personal distractions.”

“Correct,” the lead board member cleared his throat nervously. “We feel your recent... domestic arrangements make you unfit to lead a publicly traded corporation.”

Vance leaned forward, eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. “Face it, Thomas. You’re done. Hand over the keys to the kingdom.”

Thomas smiled. It wasn't a warm smile; it was the smile of a grandmaster who had just cornered his opponent’s king.

“Before we vote on anything,” Thomas said calmly, gesturing to his lawyer, “I’d like to submit Exhibit A into the corporate record.”

The lawyer popped open the steel briefcase and slid a stack of pristine, heavy-stock financial documents across the mahogany table toward the board members.

Vance frowned, picking up the top document. “What is this? A charity audit?”

“It’s an independent forensic investigation into Sterling Developments,” Thomas said, his voice ringing crisp and clear across the silent room. “Specifically, your secret offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and the illegal bribes you paid to municipal zoning inspectors to fast-track your harbor hotel project last month.”

Vance’s face instantly lost all color. The smug smile vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer panic.

“This—this is garbage!” Vance stammered, slamming the papers down. “Fabricated lies! You can’t prove—”

“I can,” Thomas interrupted, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. “In fact, the SEC and the Boston District Attorney already have copies. Federal agents are walking into your primary offices right now, Vance. Your stock is going to drop ninety points before lunch. By tomorrow morning, Sterling Developments won't even be worth the paper your letterhead is printed on.”

The board members stared at Vance in horror, frantically sliding their chairs away from him as if he carried a contagious disease.

“You son of a bitch,” Vance hissed, standing up so fast his chair knocked over backward. “You ruined me!”

May you like

“You came after my family, Vance,” Thomas replied softly, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. “You picked the wrong architect. Now, get out of my building before I have security throw you out the window.”

Vance stumbled backward, white-faced, and bolted out of the boardroom, completely destroyed.
