CHAPTER 4: THE TRUTH WASN'T BURIED UNDER THE TREE... IT WAS INSIDE HIS BLOOD

Ethan couldn't move.

The smiling reflection continued staring at him long after he had stepped away from the mirror.

Then...

It raised one finger.

Slowly.

It pointed toward the basement door.

The lights snapped back on.

The reflection was normal again.

For a moment, Ethan convinced himself it had all been exhaustion.

Until he heard three slow knocks.

From beneath the floor.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

His house didn't even have a basement.

Heart pounding, Ethan grabbed a crowbar and tore up the old wooden flooring beneath the stairs.

Underneath wasn't concrete.

It was dirt.

Freshly turned dirt.

As he dug deeper, the metal tip struck something hard.

A rusted iron chest.

Its lock had already been broken.

Inside were dozens of yellowed photographs.

Every single one showed the same giant tree.

But each photo came from a different decade.

1948...

1967...

1983...

2001...

And in every single picture...

The same man stood beside the tree.

Wearing different clothes.

Different hairstyles.

But the same face.

Ethan's face.

His hands began to shake.

That was impossible.

The oldest photograph had been taken forty years before he was born.

Hidden beneath the photos was a sealed envelope addressed in faded ink.

"To Ethan Carter... when the tree finally calls you."

He ripped it open.

Inside was a letter.

If you're reading this... then I failed.

The tree doesn't choose strangers.

It chooses one bloodline.

Every generation, it awakens.

Every generation, one Keeper must return.

At the bottom of the page was a signature.

Not his father's.

Not his grandfather's.

His brother's.

But the date beneath the signature froze Ethan's blood.

October 12... 1979.

Nearly twenty years before his brother had even been born.

Before Ethan could process what he was seeing, every light in the neighborhood went dark.

Outside...

Car alarms exploded all at once.

Dogs howled.

The ground began to tremble.

Ethan rushed to the front window.

Across the street, neighbors were walking outside in confusion.

Then they all stopped.

Every single person slowly turned their heads...

Toward Ethan's house.

At the exact same time.

None of them blinked.

None of them spoke.

Then, as one...

They smiled.

Their voices echoed together like a single living creature.

"The Keeper has awakened."

Before Ethan could slam the door shut...

A massive tree root burst through his living room floor.

It wrapped around his ankle.

And started dragging him...

Back underground.

End of Chapter 4...The root dragged Ethan beneath the floor before he could scream.

The earth swallowed him whole.

He expected to suffocate.

Instead...

He landed in the same underground chamber beneath the giant tree.

Only this time, it looked completely different.

The roots were glowing like veins.

The walls pulsed with a slow heartbeat.

And in the center of the chamber stood an enormous wooden throne.

Something was sitting on it.

A figure wrapped in tangled roots.

Its face remained hidden beneath twisted branches, but thousands of whispering voices poured from its mouth.

"Another Keeper has returned."

The roots tightened around Ethan's body.

Memories flooded into his mind.

Not his own.

Hundreds of lives.

Hundreds of Keepers.

Men...

Women...

Children...

Every one of them had entered the tree believing they could destroy it.

Every one of them had failed.

Then Ethan saw the final memory.

His brother.

He wasn't trapped.

He had chosen to stay.

Years earlier, he had discovered the terrible truth.

The tree wasn't feeding on bodies.

It was feeding on fear.

Every terrified victim made it stronger.

The only thing keeping the creature imprisoned beneath the forest...

Was a willing Keeper.

His brother had sacrificed his own freedom to stop it from reaching the outside world.

But Ethan's arrival had broken the ancient balance.

The prison was collapsing.

Suddenly, his brother stepped from the shadows.

For the first time, his eyes were normal.

No blackness.

No hollow smile.

Just tears.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

"I lied because I wanted you to have a normal life."

He placed the old notebook into Ethan's hands.

Inside, hidden between the last pages, was a single sentence Ethan had never noticed before.

"The Keeper doesn't defeat the tree...

...he chooses who survives it."

The chamber began to collapse.

Massive cracks raced across the walls.

The creature on the throne finally stood.

It was taller than the tree itself.

Its body wasn't made of wood.

It was made from thousands of human faces fused together, each silently screaming from inside the bark.

The forest above erupted.

Trees split apart.

Roads cracked open.

Across the nearby town, people looked toward Black Hollow Forest as a colossal shadow rose into the night sky.

Ethan knew there was only one chance.

One Keeper had to remain.

One had to leave.

His brother smiled sadly.

"You still have a family."

Before Ethan could stop him, his brother shoved him toward a circle of blinding light.

The last thing Ethan heard was his brother shouting—

"Seal the entrance... and never come back!"

A deafening explosion shook the mountain.

When Ethan opened his eyes...

He was lying alone in the middle of the forest.

Morning sunlight poured through the trees.

The giant tree was gone.

So was every entrance underground.

Rescue teams searched for weeks.

They found no trace of Ethan's brother.

Authorities closed the case once again.

But Ethan knew the truth.

His brother hadn't died.

He had become the new Keeper.

Three months later...

Ethan tried to move on with his life.

One rainy evening, while cleaning mud from his hiking boots, he noticed something strange.

A tiny green root had pushed through the leather.

It hadn't been there before.

As he stared at it...

The root slowly wrapped itself around his finger.

Then, somewhere far away...

His phone buzzed.

A new message.

No sender.

No number.

Only one sentence.

"The prison is breaking again..."

May you like

"...and this time, it isn't beneath the forest."
