CHAPTER 4 — “The Judge’s Accusation That Shattered Argentina’s Elite”

For three long seconds, nobody breathed.
The retired judge's trembling cane remained pointed directly at Isabel Ferrer.
Not one inch moved.
Not one guest dared interrupt him.
Then—
"What did you just say?"
Roberto's voice was barely above a whisper.
Miguel Herrera adjusted his glasses, his weathered face filled with regret.
"I said..."
"I saw who caused Carmen's injury."
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
"Impossible!"
"Isabel?"
"No way!"
"She's one of the country's biggest arts patrons!"
"This old man must be confused."
Telephones appeared in every direction.
Guests began secretly recording.
Within minutes, videos from the Montero engagement party would spread across social media.
None of them knew they were witnessing the beginning of one of Argentina's biggest public scandals.
Isabel forced herself to laugh.
A perfect, elegant laugh.
"The poor man is eighty."
She smiled sympathetically toward the crowd.
"Age affects memory."
Several guests nodded.
Don Alberto quickly stepped beside her.
"Exactly."
He looked at Miguel.
"With all due respect, Judge Herrera, perhaps you've confused one competition with another."
Miguel's expression never changed.
"No."
"I've spent forty years judging tango."
"I never confuse dancers."
Then he looked directly at Carmen.
"I've carried this guilt for ten years."
Carmen's lips trembled.
"Please..."
"You don't owe me anything."
Miguel closed his eyes.
"That's exactly the problem."
"I do."
Ten Years Earlier...
The National Tango Championship semifinal had filled the historic Teatro Colón with nearly two thousand spectators.
Backstage, the atmosphere was electric.
Reporters crowded the hallways.
Television crews interviewed finalists.
Every expert predicted the same result.
Roberto Suárez and Carmen Olivera would win the championship.
Miguel remembered watching them rehearse that afternoon.
They were flawless.
Every movement perfectly synchronized.
Every turn effortless.
They weren't simply dancing.
They were telling a love story without speaking.
Even the judges had applauded during rehearsal.
But not everyone was applauding.
Across the hallway...
Isabel Ferrer stood watching.
Her smile never reached her eyes.
Back in the present...
Miguel continued.
"I left the judges' room to make a phone call."
"When I returned backstage..."
"I heard Carmen scream."
The ballroom became completely silent.
"I ran toward the sound."
His hands shook around his cane.
"Carmen was lying at the bottom of a concrete staircase."
Several women covered their mouths.
Roberto slowly clenched his fists.
Miguel continued.
"She was crying..."
"...holding her ankle."
"There was blood."
Carmen closed her eyes.
The memory still hurt more than the scar.
"I looked up."
Miguel swallowed.
"And I saw someone standing at the top of the stairs."
He turned slowly.
Looking directly into Isabel's eyes.
"It was you."
"No."
Isabel answered immediately.
"You're lying."
Miguel ignored her.
"You looked at me..."
"...then walked away."
"That's enough!"
Isabel shouted for the first time that evening.
Her calm mask cracked.
"I never touched her!"
Miguel remained calm.
"I didn't say you pushed her."
A strange silence followed.
"You just did."
"No."
"I said I saw you."
Those two statements weren't the same.
The distinction hung heavily in the air.
Some guests noticed.
Others didn't.
Roberto did.
Don Alberto immediately seized the opportunity.
"There."
He pointed toward Miguel.
"You admitted it."
"You never actually saw anyone push her."
Several guests nodded again.
Maybe this was all a misunderstanding.
Maybe the old man had assumed too much.
Isabel smiled once more.
"You see?"
"I was only trying to help."
Carmen looked away.
This was exactly why she had stayed silent for ten years.
Without proof...
Truth sounded like jealousy.
Then Roberto spoke.
"There was another witness."
Every head turned.
Isabel's confidence vanished.
"What?"
"You weren't alone that afternoon."
Roberto stared at her.
"You forgot someone."
A memory flooded back.
The stage manager.
A seventeen-year-old apprentice named Lucas.
He had been carrying costumes through the backstage corridor.
Roberto had searched for him for months afterward.
Then Lucas disappeared.
Completely.
No forwarding address.
No phone number.
Nothing.
Almost as if someone had wanted him gone.
Victoria frowned.
"If there was another witness..."
"Where is he?"
Roberto answered quietly.
"I don't know."
"I spent years looking."
"I never found him."
Isabel's shoulders relaxed almost imperceptibly.
Good.
Lucas was gone.
He couldn't ruin everything now.
Suddenly...
A loud voice came from the ballroom entrance.
"I've been looking for all of you."
Every head turned.
An older man wearing a simple black chauffeur's uniform stood just inside the doorway.
Rain had begun outside.
His jacket was soaked.
He held a small worn leather envelope in one hand.
The security guards immediately moved toward him.
"This is a private event."
The man shook his head.
"I know."
He looked directly at Carmen.
"I came because of her."
Carmen frowned.
"I don't..."
Then she stopped.
She recognized his face.
Not immediately.
But slowly.
Older.
Grayer.
Thinner.
Then it hit her.
"Lucas?"
The envelope slipped from the man's fingers.
It landed on the marble floor.
"I've been trying to find you for ten years."
The ballroom exploded into whispers.
Roberto took one stunned step forward.
"Lucas..."
The former stage assistant nodded.
"I should have come sooner."
His voice broke.
"But I was afraid."
Isabel's face turned completely white.
"No..."
she whispered.
"No..."
Lucas slowly picked up the envelope.
Inside were faded photographs...
Medical records...
And an old cassette tape.
"I kept everything."
He looked directly at Isabel.
"Because I knew one day..."
"...someone would finally ask what really happened."
The ballroom fell silent once again.
Lucas held up one photograph.
The color had faded with age.
But every face was still recognizable.
In the picture...
Carmen was standing near the backstage staircase.
And just behind her...
Someone's hand was reaching toward her back.
The face wasn't completely visible.
But one detail was unmistakable.
A large emerald ring.
May you like
The exact same emerald ring Isabel Ferrer was wearing tonight.
