Chapter 10 - The Last KeyThat evening, Claire drove out to the quiet outskirts of Atlanta, parking her car beside a modest, weather-beaten brick building with a faded wooden sign hanging above the door: Hayes General Supplies — Est. 1984.

It was the very first store her father had opened. The one he had built with his own two hands, hammering every shingle and stocking every shelf while people laughed at him for being small.

She stepped out into the cool evening air, holding Lily securely against her chest.

She walked up to the heavy wooden front door, pulled the cold brass key from her pocket, and slid it into the antique brass lock.

It turned with a smooth, satisfying click.

The door swung open, revealing rows of neatly organized shelves, warm golden light spilling out onto the pavement.

Claire stepped inside, locking the door behind her—not to keep the world out, but to protect everything that mattered.

“We’re home, Lily,” she whispered into the quiet, welcoming space.
