Chapter 5: “She Was Never Lost... She Was Taken.”

Clare woke before dawn with a scream trapped in her throat.

She sat upright on the sofa, drenched in sweat, her heart pounding so violently she thought it might wake the twins.

The apartment was silent.

Outside, rain tapped softly against the cracked window.

For several moments, she couldn't tell whether she had been dreaming...

or remembering.

She pressed trembling fingers against her temples.

The images were still there.

A little boy holding her hand.

A summer afternoon beneath a giant oak tree.

Someone calling her name.

Then—

A black sedan.

A stranger's rough hands.

A white cloth covering her mouth.

Darkness.

Clare squeezed her eyes shut.

"No..."

"It wasn't a dream."

Across the room, Sadi quietly opened one eye.

She had heard her mother crying.

Again.

Without saying a word, she climbed off the mattress, wrapped her tiny blanket around Clare's shoulders, and whispered,

"Bad dream?"

Clare looked down at her daughter and forced a smile.

"I'll be okay."

Sadi tilted her head.

"You always say that."

Those four words broke something inside Clare.

She pulled both twins into her arms as Norah sleepily joined them.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered.

"I'm sorry you've had to grow up so fast."

Norah looked confused.

"But we're only five."

Clare laughed through tears.

"Exactly."

After breakfast—

which, for the first time in weeks, included warm toast, scrambled eggs, and fresh milk—

the apartment felt almost unfamiliar.

The girls giggled over orange juice as though it were a holiday.

Clare watched them in silence.

One stranger had changed their entire kitchen overnight.

Who was he?

And why had he looked at the painting as if he had seen a ghost?

Her eyes drifted to the business card still lying on the table.

JOHN MILLER

She picked it up again.

The moment her thumb brushed the embossed letters...

another memory flashed.

A birthday cake.

Two children arguing over who would blow out the candles first.

A woman laughing.

"John, let your sister have the first wish."

Clare gasped.

"Sister..."

The word escaped her lips before she even realized she had spoken it.

Sadi looked up.

"Mommy?"

Clare stared into space.

"I had..."

She shook her head violently.

"No..."

"I couldn't have."

Could she?

At that same moment...

John Miller had been awake for nearly thirty hours.

His office looked more like an investigation room than the headquarters of a billion-dollar company.

Family photographs.

Maps.

Old newspaper articles.

Police reports.

Every available document concerning his sister's disappearance covered the conference table.

His private investigator, Daniel Brooks, placed another folder beside him.

"I've checked every official record."

John looked up.

"And?"

"Someone rewrote Clare's identity."

John didn't speak.

Daniel continued.

"The paperwork is too clean."

"What do you mean?"

"People who create fake identities usually make mistakes."

"Wrong dates."

"Missing signatures."

"Different fonts."

"This one..."

He slid the birth certificate across the table.

"...is perfect."

John frowned.

"So?"

"So perfect..."

"...that it could only have been done by someone with direct access to government records."

Silence filled the room.

That meant power.

Money.

Connections.

Someone important.

Daniel opened another file.

"There's more."

John's stomach tightened.

"The adoption records don't exist."

"School enrollment before age eight doesn't exist."

"Dental records don't exist."

"Medical history begins exactly six months after your sister disappeared."

John whispered,

"Someone erased her."

Daniel nodded.

"Professionally."

John walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

Twenty-three years.

His parents had spent fortunes searching.

Detectives.

Psychics.

Private agencies.

International investigators.

Nothing.

Not because Clare couldn't be found.

Because someone had made sure nobody ever looked in the right direction.

Suddenly—

Emily Carter burst into the room without knocking.

She almost never lost her composure.

Today...

she looked shaken.

"I couldn't wait."

John turned immediately.

"The painting?"

Emily carefully placed several high-resolution photographs on the table.

"I used infrared imaging."

John leaned closer.

"What did you find?"

Emily took a deep breath.

"There isn't just one hidden layer."

"What?"

"There are three."

John stared at her.

She pointed to the first image.

"The visible painting shows your family standing outside the farmhouse."

She slid over the infrared scan.

"Beneath it..."

"...someone painted over another scene."

John's pulse quickened.

"What scene?"

Emily swallowed.

"A little girl."

"Running."

"Toward a black car."

The room fell silent.

"But that's not the worst part."

She revealed the final scan.

A figure stood beside the open car door.

Only part of the face remained visible beneath decades of paint.

John looked closer.

Then froze.

"No..."

He whispered.

"No..."

Emily nodded slowly.

"I know."

John recognized the man instantly.

Richard Ashford.

His father's lawyer.

The man who had comforted his grieving parents.

The man who organized search parties.

The man who stood beside their family at every press conference.

The man who had promised,

"We'll find Clare."

Yet somehow...

his face had been hidden beneath the painting.

Someone had deliberately covered him with new paint.

Someone had wanted history erased.

Meanwhile...

Richard Ashford stood inside his mansion's private library.

A servant entered quietly.

"Sir."

"They found something inside the painting."

Richard closed his book.

"How much?"

"We're not sure."

His expression darkened.

"And John?"

"He's investigating."

Richard walked slowly toward the fireplace.

His face showed no fear.

Only disappointment.

"I warned them years ago."

"They should have destroyed it."

The servant hesitated.

"What do we do now?"

Richard looked into the fire.

"For twenty-three years..."

"I've protected this family."

"Even from itself."

Then he said something that made the servant's blood run cold.

"If John reaches Clare..."

"...both of them will die."

That afternoon...

A black luxury sedan stopped across the street from Clare's apartment.

Not the same SUV.

A different car.

A woman stepped out.

Elegant.

Well dressed.

About sixty years old.

Silver hair tied neatly behind her neck.

She looked up toward Apartment 5B with tears filling her eyes.

In her trembling hands...

she held an old photograph.

A little girl with a blue ribbon.

Slowly...

she whispered,

"My baby..."

"I finally found you."

But before she could cross the street...

Another car sped around the corner.

Its engine roared.

The driver wasn't slowing down.

May you like

He was aiming directly at her.
