CHAPTER 5: THE SECRET IN THE BASEMENT THAT FINALLY BROKE THE SANDOVAL FAMILY

The Sandoval mansion had always been a symbol of power.
For decades, people looked at that enormous house in Puerta de Hierro and saw success.
Money.
Respect.
A perfect family.
But after the news report aired…
the same house became something else.
A place full of questions.
A place where every wall seemed to hide a secret.
The headline appeared everywhere:
“PROMINENT GUADALAJARA FAMILY ACCUSED OF FRAUD AND PROPERTY MANIPULATION — NEW EVIDENCE REVEALS YEARS OF DECEPTION.”
The Sandoval name, once spoken with admiration, was now being whispered with suspicion.
Don Leobardo threw the remote control across the living room.
“This is your fault.”
He looked at Andrés.
“You couldn’t control one woman.”
Andrés stood near the window, silent.
For the first time in his life…
he looked powerless.
“She had evidence.”
His father laughed bitterly.
“Evidence can disappear.”
But Andrés didn’t answer.
Because deep inside, he knew something had changed.
Renata was no longer the woman who asked for permission.
She had become the person they feared.
Meanwhile, Renata sat in Sofía’s office watching the news.
She expected to feel satisfaction.
She expected revenge to feel good.
But she didn’t.
All she felt was exhaustion.
Because every revelation came with another question.
How many lies had she lived through?
How many moments had she ignored because she wanted to believe in the man she loved?
Sofía placed a coffee in front of her.
“You know this is bigger than your apartment now.”
Renata nodded.
“I know.”
“Are you ready for what comes next?”
Renata looked at the television.
At Andrés’ family.
At the mansion where they tried to destroy her.
“Yes.”
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice spoke softly.
“Renata?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Elena.”
Renata froze.
The name meant nothing.
Until the woman continued:
“I was the person everyone thought disappeared.”
For several seconds, Renata couldn’t speak.
“Elena who?”
The woman took a shaky breath.
“Elena Vargas.”
Sofía immediately looked at her.
Because they both recognized the name.
The woman from the investigation.
The woman who disappeared five years earlier.
The woman whose case had been closed.
Renata stood up.
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because they will find me.”
A cold silence filled the room.
“Who?”
The woman whispered:
“The Sandovals.”
That night, Renata met Elena in a small café outside the city.
She arrived wearing a cap and sunglasses.
She looked like someone who had spent years hiding.
When she sat down, the first thing she said was:
“I’m sorry.”
Renata frowned.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Because I should have warned you.”
“About Andrés?”
Elena nodded.
“I knew what he was.”
Renata looked at her carefully.
“Who are you?”
Elena opened her bag.
Inside were dozens of documents.
“I worked for the Sandoval family.”
“As what?”
“Financial manager.”
Renata’s expression changed.
“And you discovered the fraud.”
“Yes.”
Elena looked down.
“They were moving money through fake companies. Using properties as collateral. Creating debts under other people’s names.”
Renata listened carefully.
“When I confronted Don Leobardo, they tried to buy my silence.”
“And when you refused?”
Elena looked away.
“They destroyed my life.”
“They told everyone I stole money.”
Renata’s eyes widened.
“They blamed you?”
“Yes.”
“They made people believe you ran away.”
Elena nodded.
“I had no choice but to disappear.”
Renata felt anger rising.
“They ruined your reputation.”
“Yes.”
“And now they tried to do the same to me.”
Elena looked at her.
“That’s why I contacted you.”
“Why me?”
A sad smile appeared on Elena’s face.
“Because you were the first person who didn’t disappear.”
The next day, Renata and Sofía reviewed every document Elena had brought.
And then they found something shocking.
A hidden account.
A company registered under a fake name.
And the owner…
was Andrés.
But there was more.
A list of payments.
Dates.
Amounts.
Names.
Renata looked at the screen.
“No…”
Sofía leaned closer.
“What?”
Renata pointed.
“Look at the dates.”
Sofía’s expression changed.
The payments started only two months after Renata married Andrés.
He hadn’t discovered her apartment later.
He had chosen her from the beginning.
The marriage.
The relationship.
Everything.
It had been planned.
That evening, Renata returned home.
She thought she was alone.
She was wrong.
When she opened the door, Andrés was inside.
Her body immediately became tense.
“How did you get in?”
He looked tired.
Broken.
Almost like the victim.
But Renata no longer fell for appearances.
“You need to leave.”
“Renata, please listen.”
“No.”
“I made mistakes.”
She laughed quietly.
“Mistakes?”
She stepped closer.
“You built an entire life based on lies.”
Andrés looked at her.
“I loved you.”
The words almost hurt.
Almost.
But then she remembered the recording.
“Once the apartment is under Mom’s name, Renata won’t have anywhere to go.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
A tear appeared in Andrés’ eyes.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Silence.
And that silence told her everything.
“You can’t, can you?”
Then Andrés said something unexpected.
“Do you really think my family is the biggest problem?”
Renata stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
His expression changed.
Fear returned.
“Leobardo wasn’t the one controlling everything.”
Renata frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Andrés looked toward the door.
As if he was afraid someone would hear.
“My father works for someone else.”
“Who?”
He swallowed.
“The person who owns all the companies.”
Renata felt a chill.
“Who?”
Andrés whispered a name.
A name she had never heard before.
But one that made Sofía, when she later heard it, go completely silent.
Because it belonged to one of the most powerful businessmen in Guadalajara.
A man who had connections everywhere.
A man who could destroy careers with one phone call.
And according to Andrés…
that man had been watching Renata for months.
The next morning, Renata received an envelope at her office.
No sender.
No name.
Inside was a single photograph.
Her.
Walking into her apartment building.
Taken from a distance.
On the back was a message:
“You should have accepted the offer.”
Renata stared at the words.
Then another line appeared below:
“Next time, we won’t ask.”
For the first time since the dinner…
Renata felt fear.
Not because she wanted to surrender.
But because she realized something terrifying.
The Sandoval family was only the beginning.
The person behind them had just entered the game.
And he was far more dangerous than anyone she had faced before.
But he made one mistake…
He underestimated what happens when someone who has lost everything…
May you like
has nothing left to fear.
