CHAPTER 1 The Night the Perfect Husband Began to Bleed Secrets

The crystal chandeliers of the Imperial Palace Hotel glittered above Monterrey's elite.

Champagne flowed.

Violins played.

Journalists moved from table to table, searching for scandals hidden beneath diamonds and designer smiles.

At the center of it all sat Mariana Salvatierra.

Forty guests had already approached her that evening.

Every single one of them asked the same question.

"Why don't you and Rodrigo have children yet?"

She smiled politely every time.

She had learned that rich people never asked questions because they cared.

They asked because they were hungry.

Hungry for gossip.

Hungry for weakness.

Hungry for blood.

Mariana lifted her wine glass and glanced at the giant portrait hanging behind the stage.

GRUPO SALVATIERRA – 60 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

Her father had built that company from nothing.

Her grandfather had started with a tiny transport business and transformed it into one of northern Mexico's largest logistics empires.

And now?

Her husband was destroying it piece by piece.

No one knew.

Not yet.

A soft voice interrupted her thoughts.

"Señora Salvatierra… are you alright?"

It was Elena, one of the older employees.

Mariana smiled.

"Perfectly."

But she wasn't.

Because she knew tonight would change everything.

At exactly nine o'clock, the ballroom doors opened.

Every head turned.

Rodrigo Salvatierra had arrived.

And he wasn't alone.

The room exploded with whispers.

On his arm stood Valeria Mendez.

Twenty-eight.

Beautiful.

Young.

The company's executive secretary.

A woman who smiled with her lips but never with her eyes.

Holding her hand was a little girl with dark curls.

And in Rodrigo's arms…

a newborn baby.

Silence swallowed the room.

Then—

cameras flashed.

Someone gasped.

Someone else nearly dropped a champagne flute.

Rodrigo grinned.

He loved attention more than money.

More than power.

More than loyalty.

He stepped onto the stage without being invited.

"Ladies and gentlemen…" he announced.

"I have wonderful news tonight."

Mariana remained seated.

Completely calm.

The little girl looked at Rodrigo and called him:

"Daddy."

The entire ballroom erupted.

"Oh my God!"

"Did you hear that?"

"Those are his children!"

"Poor Mariana!"

Rodrigo kissed the baby's forehead dramatically.

"The Salvatierra family has been blessed with two beautiful heirs."

He said it proudly.

As if he had just conquered an empire.

As if his wife were already dead.

Valeria looked directly at Mariana.

And smiled.

A cruel, victorious smile.

The kind of smile one gives when stealing another woman's life.

A photographer approached Mariana.

"Mrs. Salvatierra… would you like to join your husband on stage?"

The room waited.

Everyone expected tears.

A breakdown.

A slap.

A scandal.

Instead, Mariana smiled.

"Of course not," she replied softly.

"Tonight belongs to them."

Her answer made people pity her even more.

Poor Mariana.

Poor childless wife.

Poor abandoned woman.

No one realized she wasn't heartbroken.

She was counting.

Counting lies.

Counting witnesses.

Counting the seconds until Rodrigo's world collapsed.

Because five years earlier…

a doctor had called her.

A doctor carrying a secret powerful enough to destroy an entire dynasty.

Five years earlier.

Monterrey Medical Center.

Rodrigo had complained for months about not having children.

His mother blamed Mariana.

His friends mocked him.

Even newspapers occasionally hinted that the Salvatierra heir lacked descendants.

So Mariana scheduled fertility tests.

Rodrigo hated hospitals.

He spent the entire appointment staring at his phone.

After ten minutes, he stood up.

"I have meetings."

"The results will be ready this afternoon," the doctor said.

Rodrigo shrugged.

"Call my wife."

Then he left.

He never came back.

At four in the afternoon, Mariana answered the phone.

"Mrs. Salvatierra… are you alone?"

Her heart skipped.

"Yes."

There was a pause.

Then the doctor spoke.

"Your husband cannot have children."

The room spun.

"What?"

"The damage is permanent. Biologically, he is infertile."

Mariana stopped breathing.

She thought there had been a mistake.

"There must be another test—"

"There isn't."

Silence.

Then the doctor added gently:

"I'm sorry."

Mariana sat on the kitchen floor and cried.

Not because she wanted children.

But because she suddenly understood her marriage.

Rodrigo had spent years making her believe she was broken.

Years making her feel guilty.

Years watching her suffer.

And he had known.

Deep down…

he had always known.

That night she called him eleven times.

He never answered.

At midnight, she opened social media.

There he was.

Laughing in a luxury restaurant.

And sitting beside him…

was Valeria.

Young.

Beautiful.

Touching his hand.

That was the first night Mariana realized her marriage was already dead.

Two years later, Valeria announced she was pregnant.

Rodrigo arrived home carrying flowers.

Not for Mariana.

For himself.

"I knew it!" he shouted.

"The problem was never me."

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

Then he said the words Mariana would never forget.

"You couldn't give me a family."

She stared at him.

Said nothing.

And in that moment…

something inside her froze.

She no longer loved him.

She no longer hated him.

She simply began preparing.

Preparing for war.

She copied financial records.

Saved emails.

Reviewed contracts.

She discovered millions of pesos missing from company accounts.

Apartments bought with corporate money.

Luxury vacations disguised as business expenses.

And dozens of documents naming Valeria's children as future shareholders.

A fraud.

A massive fraud.

And every piece of evidence led directly to Rodrigo.

Mariana waited.

Patiently.

Like a hunter.

Because revenge is most effective when your enemy believes he has already won.

Back in the ballroom, Rodrigo stepped down from the stage.

He approached her.

"You behaved well tonight."

She smiled.

"I told you I wouldn't ruin your moment."

He leaned closer.

"You finally accepted reality."

"Perhaps."

"Good."

He kissed Valeria's hand in front of everyone.

Then the little girl hugged his leg.

"Daddy!"

Everyone melted.

Everyone smiled.

Everyone believed the fairy tale.

Except Mariana.

Because she knew something none of them knew.

Those children…

could never be Rodrigo's.

Never.

And tomorrow morning…

he had an appointment at the hospital.

An executive medical examination.

One final interview.

One innocent question.

A question that would drain every drop of blood from his face.

A question that would destroy his marriage…

his reputation…

and perhaps his freedom.

Mariana lifted her glass.

And for the first time that night—

she smiled for real.

Because the king was about to discover that his heirs were impossible.
