Chapter 7 - The Master’s LibraryBy midnight, the guests had gone home, driven away by the flashing police lights and the scandalous shock of the evening. The strings of white lights overhead still twinkled in the dark oak trees, but the grand pavilion was empty, littered with abandoned champagne flutes and scattered rose petals.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the library, the air smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and burning cedar from the fireplace.

I sat behind my heavy oak desk—the same desk where Grant and Vanessa had plotted my family's destruction. Across from me sat Rachel, holding a steaming mug of chamomile tea, her color finally returning. On the rug beside her, Noah was fast asleep, his little head pillowed on his canvas backpack, clutching a toy dinosaur in his small hand.

Frank and Daniel stood near the door, smoking quiet cigars out on the balcony while Dr. Howard Greene packed up his medical bag inside the room.

"Your blood work results came back from the independent lab in Nashville an hour ago, Rachel," Howard said softly, snapping his leather case shut. "The low-level toxins they were slipping into your evening vitamins were designed to mimic chronic fatigue syndrome and early-stage neurological decline. Another two months... and you would have been institutionalized."

Rachel closed her eyes, a shiver running through her shoulders. She set her mug down on the saucer with a soft click. "And they would have taken Noah. And grandfather's company."

"They would have tried," I said, leaning forward and placing my hand over hers. Her skin was warm, steady, and alive. "But they forgot one very important detail about Bennett House."

Rachel looked up, a faint, tired smile touching her lips. "What's that, Dad?"

"Children notice everything grown-ups try to hide," I replied, glancing down at my sleeping grandson. "And an old man who built his life from twenty-eight borrowed dollars doesn't lose his empire without a fight."

"What happens now?" she asked quietly.

"Now? Grant is facing twenty years for corporate fraud and poisoning. Vanessa’s offshore accounts have already been frozen by federal marshals acting on Daniel's digital audit. Their shell companies are dismantled, and our legal team filed for an emergency annulment and custody order before midnight."

I stood up, walked over to the mahogany liquor cabinet, and poured two fingers of Tennessee whiskey. I handed one glass to Rachel.

"To family," I said, raising my glass.

Rachel stood up, clinking her teacup softly against my glass. "To family."
