CHAPTER 5 — THE BABY'S FIRST CRY LEFT THE ENTIRE HOSPITAL IN TEARS

Room 402 had never been so quiet.
Not because the danger had passed.
But because everyone understood that the next few minutes would decide the fate of two lives.
Every doctor stood at their position.
Every nurse watched the monitors.
Every heartbeat echoed through the room like thunder.
Dr. Fernando Cárdenas took one slow breath.
"Everyone stay focused."
"No unnecessary movement."
"Talk to me immediately if anything changes."
Around him, the twelve specialists nodded.
Hours earlier, they had been arguing over what to do.
Now...
They moved as one team.
On the bed, Sofía could barely keep her eyes open.
She felt as though every ounce of strength had left her body.
Through blurred vision, she searched for her husband.
Alejandro hurried to her side and gently took her hand.
"I'm here."
"You are not alone."
A single tear rolled down Sofía's cheek.
"I..."
"I'm afraid."
Alejandro kissed her forehead.
"So am I."
"But we'll face this together."
Dr. Isabel Moreno leaned close to Sofía.
"Listen to my voice."
"You've done something extraordinary."
"We need just one more effort."
"You can do this."
Sofía gave the faintest nod.
Outside the room, Rosalba stood silently in the hallway.
She wasn't watching through the window.
She wasn't trying to direct anyone.
Instead, she quietly whispered the same prayer her grandmother had taught her decades ago.
"Protect the mother."
"Protect the child."
"And guide the hands of those who care for them."
A young nurse paused beside her.
"Were you ever afraid?"
Rosalba smiled gently.
"Every single time."
"The day a birth stops making you humble..."
"...is the day you stop respecting life."
Inside the room, another contraction began.
"Here it comes!"
Dr. Moreno announced.
The baby's heartbeat dipped slightly...
Then recovered.
"Good."
"Very good."
The room held its breath.
"I can see more of the baby's head."
Encouraged, the team continued.
The obstetricians carefully guided Sofía through the next moments, constantly reassessing her condition and the baby's response.
Minutes felt like hours.
Then...
A tiny shoulder appeared.
"We have progress!"
The neonatal team moved into position.
One final coordinated effort...
One final push...
And suddenly—
A newborn baby slipped safely into waiting hands.
For one terrifying second...
There was no sound.
The room froze.
Alejandro's heart stopped.
Sofía closed her eyes.
Then...
A sharp cry pierced the silence.
Loud.
Strong.
Beautiful.
The room erupted.
Several nurses burst into tears.
Dr. Mateo laughed in disbelief.
Even Dr. Cárdenas removed his glasses to wipe away tears he hadn't expected.
"It's a girl."
Healthy cries filled the delivery room.
Alejandro collapsed into the chair beside Sofía, overwhelmed.
He kissed her hand again and again.
"You did it."
"We have our daughter."
Sofía smiled weakly.
"For the first time in forty-one hours..."
"I can finally hear her."
The neonatal team quickly completed their assessment.
"Breathing well."
"Heart rate stable."
"Good color."
Dr. Moreno smiled.
"She's doing wonderfully."
Relief spread across the room.
The danger had not disappeared entirely—Sofía still required careful monitoring—but the worst moment had passed.
Outside, the delivery room door slowly opened.
Dr. Cárdenas stepped into the hallway.
Rosalba immediately stood.
His eyes met hers.
"They're both alive."
Rosalba closed her eyes.
A quiet tear rolled down her face.
"Thank God."
Alejandro walked out carrying his newborn daughter wrapped in a soft pink blanket.
The billionaire who had once believed money could solve every problem now stood before the hospital janitor with tears streaming down his face.
Without saying a word...
He knelt.
The entire hallway gasped.
Doctors.
Nurses.
Visitors.
Security guards.
No one had ever seen one of Mexico's most powerful businessmen kneel before anyone.
Alejandro looked up at Rosalba.
"I cannot repay what you've given my family."
Rosalba gently shook her head.
"You don't owe me."
"You owe the people who never stopped fighting for your wife."
She looked toward the delivery room.
"The doctors."
"The nurses."
"Everyone inside."
"They saved her."
Alejandro turned toward the medical team.
For the first time that day, every doctor received applause.
Not because one person had performed a miracle...
But because they had trusted one another enough to keep searching for answers when hope seemed lost.
Yet as the celebration began...
No one noticed the elderly woman standing quietly at the far end of the hallway.
She had been watching everything.
Tightly clutched in her hands was an old leather journal with faded Zapotec symbols on its cover.
When she saw Rosalba...
She whispered in astonishment,
"So..."
"You are Jacinta's granddaughter."
Rosalba slowly turned.
The color drained from her face.
Because she recognized the woman instantly.

A woman everyone in her village believed had died more than thirty years earlier.
