CHAPTER 3 — "She Didn't Lose Her Voice... She Was Protecting Someone."

Olivia could barely breathe.

The words echoed inside her head like thunder.

"...Emily talked to Dad the whole way to the hospital."

"No..."

Her voice cracked.

"That's impossible."

Daniel looked at his son with quiet disappointment, but there was no anger in his eyes.

Only resignation.

The secret had survived three years.

Now it had finally escaped.

"Ethan," Daniel said gently, "go play by the monkey bars for a few minutes."

The little boy lowered his head.

"I'm sorry, Dad."

"You didn't do anything wrong."

Ethan nodded and slowly walked away.

The moment he was out of earshot, Olivia stepped closer.

"You owe me the truth."

Daniel looked toward Emily.

She was watching both of them carefully.

She wasn't frightened.

She looked... anxious.

As though she knew exactly what they were talking about.

Daniel sighed.

"I promised I would never tell anyone."

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

"You promised who?"

Daniel hesitated.

"...Emily."

Olivia stared at him.

"My daughter hadn't spoken in three years."

"I know."

"So how could she possibly ask you to keep a promise?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Because she spoke that morning."

The air seemed to disappear.

For several seconds, Olivia couldn't hear the playground anymore.

Only her own heartbeat.

Daniel finally spoke.

"When I reached your car, you were unconscious."

"The driver's door wouldn't open."

"I climbed through the broken rear window."

His voice remained calm, but every sentence sounded like it had been rehearsed a thousand times.

"Emily wasn't crying."

"She was trying to wake you."

Olivia felt tears roll down her face.

"'Mommy...'"

"'Mommy, wake up...'"

Daniel swallowed hard.

"I've never forgotten her voice."

Olivia covered her mouth.

It had been three years since anyone had heard those words.

"She was trapped beneath the seatbelt," Daniel continued.

"I cut the belt with my pocketknife."

"When I lifted her out..."

"...she grabbed my jacket."

Daniel looked down at his hands.

"She wouldn't let go."

"What did she say?"

For a long moment, Daniel didn't answer.

Then he whispered,

"'Please save my mommy.'"

Olivia broke.

She sank onto the nearby bench, sobbing uncontrollably.

Her daughter...

Her little girl...

Hadn't been thinking about herself.

She'd only been worried about her mother.

Daniel waited quietly until Olivia could breathe again.

"There wasn't enough time."

"The engine caught fire."

"I handed Emily to a paramedic."

"Then I went back for you."

Olivia looked at his damaged leg.

"You were hurt because of us."

Daniel shook his head.

"I was hurt because I made a choice."

"And I'd make it again."

Silence settled between them.

Finally Olivia asked the question she feared most.

"If Emily was speaking..."

"...why did everyone believe she stopped immediately after the crash?"

Daniel's face grew serious.

"Because after one particular conversation..."

"...she never spoke again."

Olivia frowned.

"What conversation?"

Daniel looked toward Emily once more.

She was drawing circles in the dirt with her shoe.

Completely silent.

"As the ambulance drove toward Mercy General Hospital," Daniel said quietly, "I sat beside her."

"She kept asking whether you were alive."

"I told her yes."

"She smiled."

The memory softened his face.

"For about fifteen minutes..."

"...she talked like any ordinary little girl."

Olivia closed her eyes.

She tried to imagine those lost fifteen minutes.

Fifteen minutes she never knew existed.

Fifteen minutes stolen from her forever.

Daniel continued.

"Then traffic slowed."

"There were police cars ahead."

"Emily looked through the ambulance window."

"And suddenly..."

"...she became terrified."

Olivia leaned forward.

"What did she see?"

Daniel's voice dropped almost to a whisper.

"A man."

"What man?"

"I don't know."

"But she recognized him."

Olivia frowned.

"Recognized?"

Daniel nodded.

"She pointed through the glass."

"She grabbed my arm."

"And she whispered..."

He stopped.

His hands began trembling.

Olivia had never seen someone so composed struggle so much to continue.

"What did she say?"

Daniel finally looked into Olivia's eyes.

"'That's the bad man.'"

Olivia felt ice run through her veins.

"What?"

"'That's the bad man.'"

Daniel repeated the sentence exactly as he remembered it.

"Then she started crying."

"I asked who she meant."

"She only kept pointing."

"What happened next?"

"The ambulance moved."

"The man disappeared."

"And Emily..."

Daniel swallowed.

"...never spoke another word."

Neither of them noticed Emily had stopped drawing.

She was staring directly at Daniel.

As if remembering every second.

Olivia whispered,

"You never told the police?"

"I did."

"And?"

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"They assumed she was confused."

"A traumatized child."

"They told me children often invent memories after accidents."

Olivia clenched her fists.

"So they ignored her?"

"They wrote one sentence into the report."

He remembered it perfectly.

Child appeared disoriented. Statement considered unreliable.

Three years.

An eyewitness account...

Dismissed because it came from a frightened little girl.

Olivia's phone suddenly vibrated.

She almost ignored it.

The caller ID read:

UNKNOWN NUMBER

She answered absentmindedly.

"Hello?"

A calm male voice replied.

"Mrs. Hayes..."

"You should stop asking questions about Highway 14."

Olivia froze.

Daniel immediately recognized the fear in her face.

"Who's calling?"

The stranger continued.

"Some memories are dangerous."

Click.

The line went dead.

Olivia stared at her phone.

No caller ID.

No number.

Nothing.

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Did he mention the accident?"

She nodded slowly.

For the first time since they'd met...

Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

He whispered only four words.

"They know we met."

At that exact moment...

Across the parking lot...

A black SUV with heavily tinted windows quietly pulled away from the curb.

Neither Olivia nor Daniel noticed the tiny camera hidden behind the windshield.

But someone inside had photographed them.

Every second.

Every conversation.

Every expression.

And before the SUV disappeared around the corner...

A gloved hand sent a single text message.

"Target has remembered. Proceed to Phase Two."
