CHAPTER 4 — "The Man in the Black SUV Wasn't Watching Olivia... He Was Watching Emily."

The black SUV disappeared into traffic.

Inside, no one spoke.

A man in a dark suit slid a tablet across the seat.

On the screen were dozens of photographs taken only minutes earlier.

Olivia crying.

Daniel standing beside her.

Emily looking directly at him.

The man zoomed in on one image.

Emily's face.

Then he smiled.

"So..."

"She remembers."

He deleted every other picture.

Only Emily's remained.

Olivia gripped her phone so tightly her fingers hurt.

The unknown caller's words refused to leave her mind.

"Stop asking questions about Highway 14."

Daniel looked around the playground.

Years of construction work had taught him something important.

Danger rarely announced itself.

It watched first.

"We should leave."

Olivia nodded immediately.

She hurried toward Emily.

"Sweetheart..."

Emily turned.

For a brief second, she looked past Olivia.

Toward the parking lot.

Her eyes widened.

Fear.

Pure fear.

She grabbed Olivia's hand so suddenly that it almost hurt.

Olivia knelt.

"What is it?"

Emily couldn't answer.

Instead...

She slowly lifted one trembling finger.

Pointing toward the road.

The exact direction where the SUV had disappeared.

Daniel noticed.

His face turned pale.

"She's pointing at the same place."

Olivia looked at him.

"The ambulance..."

Daniel nodded.

"That's exactly what she did that day."

A chill ran through Olivia's body.

Back at Olivia's penthouse overlooking the Chicago skyline, the silence felt heavier than ever.

Emily usually spent Saturday afternoons drawing.

Today she didn't.

She stood by the living-room window, staring down at the traffic thirty floors below.

As though expecting someone.

Olivia walked over carefully.

"Emily?"

No response.

She gently wrapped an arm around her daughter.

Emily leaned into her mother...

But kept watching outside.

Then...

She lifted one finger.

Slowly.

She wrote something in the fog that had formed on the cool glass.

A single letter.

M

Then another.

A

Then another.

R

Olivia's heartbeat quickened.

"Mark?"

Emily shook her head.

She continued writing.

M A R C...

Then suddenly stopped.

Her breathing became fast.

She rubbed the entire word away with both hands before Olivia could finish reading it.

"What was it?"

Emily backed away.

Terrified.

Olivia realized her daughter wasn't forgetting.

She was stopping herself.

Almost as if speaking—or even writing—certain things had become dangerous.

That evening, Olivia couldn't sleep.

She opened the old storage box she'd kept hidden in the back of her closet for years.

Inside were everything the police had returned after the accident.

Her cracked wristwatch.

Burned photographs.

Insurance papers.

Emily's tiny blue shoe.

Hospital records.

She had gone through the box dozens of times before.

Tonight...

She noticed something different.

Folded between two medical reports was a business card.

Its edges were burned.

How had she never seen it?

The front read:

Marcus Reed
Independent Accident Reconstruction Specialist

On the back, written in blue ink:

"Call me if the police stop listening."

Olivia frowned.

She didn't remember meeting any Marcus Reed.

She immediately searched the name online.

Nothing.

No website.

No company.

No license.

It was as if the man had never existed.

Then she noticed a tiny handwritten phone number beneath the name.

Her finger hovered over the Call button.

Finally...

She pressed it.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Someone answered.

The voice sounded old.

Cautious.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Olivia sat upright.

"You know who I am?"

"I've been expecting your call for three years."

Her blood ran cold.

"Who are you?"

The man answered quietly.

"I'm the investigator the insurance company fired."

"Why?"

"Because I proved..."

He suddenly stopped talking.

Olivia heard another sound.

A loud crash.

Then a man's voice shouting in the background.

Footsteps.

Something falling.

The old man whispered urgently,

"They found me."

"What?"

"Listen carefully."

His breathing became uneven.

"The crash..."

"...wasn't an accident."

The line filled with static.

"Mr. Reed?"

"You must never let Emily testify."

"What are you talking about?"

"If they realize..."

The call suddenly cut off.

Dead silence.

Olivia called again.

No answer.

Again.

Straight to voicemail.

Her hands began shaking.

Across town...

Daniel had just finished putting Ethan to bed.

He quietly walked into the garage behind his small house.

Against the far wall stood an old metal cabinet.

Locked.

He unlocked it with a tiny brass key he wore around his neck.

Inside were dozens of folders.

Every newspaper clipping about Highway 14.

Every police report.

Every hospital document.

Every photograph.

He had spent three years investigating alone.

At the bottom of the cabinet lay one sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in black marker, were six words:

OPEN ONLY IF I AM KILLED.

Daniel stared at it for a long time.

Then, for the first time in three years...

He picked it up.

At that same moment...

A masked man quietly entered Marcus Reed's abandoned office.

Papers covered the floor.

Drawers had been emptied.

Computers smashed.

The man searched every shelf before stopping beside the old wooden desk.

He smiled.

One file was missing.

He spoke into a small radio hidden beneath his jacket.

"Reed talked."

A distorted voice answered immediately.

"And the file?"

"We couldn't find it."

A long silence followed.

Finally the voice replied,

"Then find the little girl."

The masked man's eyes narrowed.

"You think she knows where it is?"

"No."

The voice became colder.

"I think..."

May you like

"...she is the evidence."
