Chapter 10 - THE LAST SPOONFULSix months later.

The autumn leaves had turned a brilliant shade of amber and crimson, carpeting the grand gravel driveway of the Whitmore estate with a golden crunch underfoot.

The iron security gates—once heavily reinforced with blast plates and bristling with tactical cameras—stood wide open, welcoming local delivery trucks, legal consultants, and visiting dignitaries without a single hostile checkpoint in sight.

Inside the massive, sunlit kitchen, the air was filled with the rich, comforting aroma of cinnamon, vanilla, and warm, freshly brewed oats.

Claire stood by the marble island, carefully ladling a steaming portion of porridge into two small porcelain bowls.

A pair of small, chubby hands wrapped around her knees from behind.

“Mommy, is it ready yet?” a cheerful little voice chimed up.

Claire smiled, turning around and picking up three-year-old Lily, setting her down gently onto her usual high-backed wooden chair at the head of the long dining table.

“Patience, little wolf,” Claire laughed, kissing the top of the child's bright, healthy curls. “You know the rules.”

The heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open, and Grant Whitmore walked in. He wore a crisp, tailored charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair neatly combed, his step firm and commanding. The frail, shaking, dying old man who had limped through these halls six months ago was gone, replaced by a restored patriarch who commanded absolute respect simply by walking into a room.

He didn't sit at the head of the table anymore. Instead, he pulled out the chair directly to the left of little Lily, sitting down beside her just as he had done on that fateful rainy morning.

Claire slid the first bowl across the polished wood toward the little girl.

Lily picked up her silver spoon, dipped it into the warm porridge, blew on it three careful times, and took a small, deliberate taste.

Her nose didn't wrinkle. Her stomach didn't cramp.

Instead, a bright, joyful grin spread across her face.

“It’s sweet today, Mister!” Lily announced happily, holding out her spoon toward Grant. “Want some?”

Grant Whitmore looked down at the spoon, then turned his gaze toward Claire, who stood leaning against the kitchen archway with a warm, unbreakable smile, before finally looking back at the bright, living proof of everything he had fought to protect.

For the first time in his life, the feared mafia boss didn't taste paranoia, betrayal, or poison.

He tasted a future.

“Yes, little one,” Grant said, his voice rich and steady as he leaned over and took the first spoonful. “It’s very sweet indeed.”
