Chapter 1 - THE TOY CAR'S SECRETThe plastic snap of the hidden compartment inside the red toy car broke the tense silence of the Grand Imperial Hotel entrance like a gunshot.
Eleven-year-old Mateo—raised as "Matthew" under the suffocating thumb of Doña Victoria Alarcón—stared down at the faded black marker scrawled on the inside of the battery casing: Mateo Serrano.
"Why is that my name?" the boy whispered, looking up at Victoria with terrified, wide eyes.
Victoria Alarcón’s face went completely, corpse-like white. The untouchable matriarch of elite high society lost all color, her manicured fingers trembling as she reached out to snatch the toy from the boy's hands.
"Give me that filthy thing right now, Matthew!" Victoria shrieked, her voice losing its polished composure, replaced by the panic of a cornered criminal.
Before her fingers could brush the plastic, former detective Rafael Cruz stepped heavily between them, his hand resting menacingly on the concealed holster beneath his tailored suit jacket.
"Back off, Serrano," Cruz snarled, glaring down at Daniel with the cold eyes of a man who had buried evidence for a living. "You’ve crossed a line. That kid belongs to the Alarcón family trust now. Move another inch, and I’ll have you locked up in a psychiatric ward before sundown."
Daniel Serrano didn't flinch.
He didn't back down.
Instead, a slow, terrifyingly calm smile spread across Daniel’s face. He stood up straight, his gaze shifting from the corrupt ex-cop to the trembling woman who had stolen his flesh and blood six years ago.
"You think you closed my file, Cruz?" Daniel asked, his voice low and steady. "You thought because I was just a mechanic from the wrong side of the city, I’d take my grief and go quietly into the ground?"

"I don't need money," Daniel said, pulling a heavy, water-resistant flash drive from his jacket pocket and holding it up for them to see. "I have a complete digital ledger of every bribe Victoria paid you, every forged birth certificate you filed, and every child-trafficking shell company you protected since 2020."
