chapter 1

The little girl couldn't have been older than six.

Every afternoon, as the golden sun painted the old European street in warm colors, she walked to the same tiny cupcake cart with a few crumpled coins clutched tightly in her small hand.

She never bought candy for herself.

She never asked for toys.

Instead, she carefully chose the prettiest cupcake on the shelf.

People smiled, assuming she simply had a sweet tooth.

They couldn't have been more wrong.

Across from the cart sat an elderly man on an old wooden bench.

His clothes were clean but worn.

His hands trembled with age.

His eyes carried the emptiness of someone the world had already forgotten.

No one knew his name.

No one stopped to ask.

Every day, the little girl silently carried the cupcake to him.

"Here... this one's for you."

The old man always smiled with watery eyes.

"You shouldn't spend your money on me."

"But you always look hungry."

That simple answer shattered him every single time.

For weeks, this became their secret ritual.

The bakery owner watched from a distance.

The neighbors whispered.

"Poor child..."

"She must feel sorry for him."

"No family would let their daughter do this."

But they had no idea why she kept coming back.

One chilly afternoon, the old man asked softly,

"Why are you always so kind to me?"

The girl lowered her eyes.

"My mommy says no one should eat alone."

Silence.

The old man's hands began to shake.

Because twenty years earlier...

His own daughter had once said those exact same words.

The same smile.

The same gentle voice.

The same innocent heart.

A memory he had buried deep inside suddenly came rushing back.

Could it really be...

No.

It was impossible.

His daughter had disappeared decades ago after a tragic family accident.

He had searched for years.

Then finally gave up.

Yet somehow...

This little girl looked exactly like her.

The next afternoon, he gathered enough courage to ask,

"Sweetheart... what's your name?"

She smiled brightly.

"My name is Emma."

His heart skipped a beat.

That had been his daughter's favorite name for her future child.

Before he could ask another question...

A black luxury SUV screeched to a stop beside the sidewalk.

A sharply dressed woman rushed out, her face pale with panic.

"Emma!"

The little girl froze.

The woman grabbed her hand immediately.

"I've told you never to come here again!"

Emma looked back at the old man, tears filling her eyes.

"But Grandpa hasn't eaten yet..."

Grandpa?

The old man's entire body went numb.

The woman slowly turned toward him.

The moment their eyes met...

She burst into tears.

"Dad..."

The cupcake slipped from Emma's tiny hands and hit the pavement.

The old man's lips trembled.

His knees nearly gave way.

Because standing before him...

Was the daughter he had believed had died twenty-three years ago.

And the little girl who had secretly fed him every afternoon...

Wasn't a stranger at all.

She was his granddaughter.

But if his daughter had survived all these years...

Why had she allowed him to believe she was dead?

May you like

And who had been lying to them both for over two decades?

To Be Continued...
